If anyone wants to do the North Woolwich Old Station Museum be quick - its been given its closing date following Newham Council withdrawing its funding.

5th July is the last day, although all the stock apart from 1 coach has now gone, what remains are the excellent GER displays within the building.

No firm decision on the future yet once the Museum is shut

I pass it regularly, at varying times of day. NEVER seen it open for business.

I think it's only been open weekend afternoons recently. They had some young kids thing there during weekday afternoons which prevented it being open.

I went there when the Great Eastern Railway Class 209 was lifted out of the old turn table area (although this was not a public open day):

Apart from just a few relics from the GER, there was really sod all there at North Woolwich, though you wouldn't expect much for free. More appealing for kids because of all the interactive things!

It was the displays which made it worth a look - apart from the NRM I've not seen a railway preservation site with such things in such detail - the input from the GER Society must have helped.

I think it helped them that it was council run (although not now with the withdrawal of funding!), rather than a place to play trains and build empires which ruin a lot of similar places as people there got on and did their job rather than messing about with internal politics

Hell of a place to park though. Last time I was there I was in such a hurry to get in before it closed I ended up with the van in the que for the ruddy ferry! Try getting out of that in a hurry.

Seriously though, I lived South of the river in Woolwich for many years in my previous life as Squaddie and never visited the place until recently.

I found it a tranquil and charming little oasis in the middle of frenetic reality. The staff were very friendly and the place was realy interesting. I wish I had had more time.

I dare say it's very location has brought about it's demise. Shame to see it go.

Some excellent photos there, good to see it at better times.

I agree re. the parking. We had to park on the forecourt by going across the path, although no one cared as this was after the NLL station was shut.

The guy who ran the place said that most people came via the NLL and since that closed their visitor numbers have dropped

As for what i said, the GER relics were brilliant, the staff were friendly when i last visited but i felt most of the museum was more gathered for children!

It's location on the now closed stub of the NLL meant it would not last long after closure of the section

Wasn't there a plan to make a temporary heritage railway out of the site at North woolwich, to Custom House? I remember reading about it in heritage railway back in '06, and not heard anything about it since.

Aparently there is still a chance that (along with the Railschool) this may happen, but seems unlikely, especially as the site must be emtpy by end of July
