North Woolwich line

hi i have been looking at the line and i was wondering why when it closed did they take up the 3rd rail becaue on the croxleygreen branch they left the 3rd rail and it can been seen today anyone know why also is there any old stock in the museam at north woolwich that closed down

also i forgot at canning town were the dlc platforms what used them when it first opened in 1995(thats the new station the old staion closed in the 60s)

Stratford-North Woolwich (it was the North London Line's eastern terminus) closed 9 December 2006. It ran from Stratford into the old NNL platforms inside the new concourse, then down through Canning Town to North Woolwich. It was closed as part of the route was needed for proposed (now confirmed) DLR extention works to Stratford for the Olympics. It uses the old trackbed from Stratford down to Canning Town I think, then diverts away, leaving the Line through Silvertown to North Woolwich disused (they were looking at this being preserved according to Baker), and I think there were calls to repopen it, though I'm not sure where to. There was an half-hourly service all-day everyday along the line beyond Stratford (4tph ex-Richmond, 2 terminated at Strtford, 2 continued), worked by Class 313s.

The plan is to use it for crossrail, tunneling under the thames from north woolwich to abbey wood. This idea has been around for many years though, long before crossrail. It may happen this time...

Crossrail will surface somewhere near Royal Victoria DLR. Custom House NR will be comprehensively rebuilt and thus reopened. The line will follow the old line down through the Connaught tunnel. It'll then run along the surface, with a potentila (though not as part of the current building works) station at Silvertown for the airport. It'll then dive back down before North Woolwich to go under the Thames. There will be a subsurface station at Woolwich before the line comes back to the surface at Abbey Wood. Add that the DLR has taken over Canning Town- Stratford, essentially the whole route will be reused, but re-purposed.

Awarded to BAM Nuttall Ltd I believe. They are big contracts somewhere in the 250 million region.

Remember a quality article around 1980 in the 'Railway Modeller' about the 'Silvertown Tramway', to use it as a basis for an industrial layout with passenger service, always kept an 'eye' out for this line after that, North Woolich being the end of the line obviously.

The GER Society emptied the old museum and premises within a year of the line's closure. The vast majority of smaller exhibits are now archived at Stratford; and rail-borne vehicles were sold off.

Crossrail work has indeed started in the area - demolition of a pub and redundant buildings around Silvertown, plus advertising / signage warning of diversions and delays along the local roads.

Mind you, I still expect the Thames cable-car project (aerial transport from Excel to O2) to be completed before Crossrail's tunneling is done in that area...
