Quick Question - Does North Tyneside contain any railway stations (National Rail)? I cannot think of any and I don't think there are any.

No, not since Metro arrived. Manors is in Newcastle and Cramlington is in Northumberland - there's nothing in between.

I am being pedantic but there is the staion on the North Tyneside steam railway.

I wonder if it woukd still be possible to Bring Chaters into Tynemouth Station if alterations were made top the platform barriers.

I wonder how easy it would be to have a "DMUs on the Metro" event on the Tyne and Wear Metro.

Travelling on the ECML today, I passed through the site of the former Killingworth Station (six miles after Newcastle Station). I guess that's about as close as any present day passenger service on the mainlines will get to a station in North Tyneside.

No, I'd say not. There will not be enough clearance under the OHLE for a standard loading gauge train to fit. (The system was built with smaller trains so that fewer alterations to overbridges and tunnels would be needed to accomodate the OHLE). On the section of track that was shared (between Longbenton and Kenton Bankfoot) with big (freight) trains, the OHLE was higher. Ditto the now shared section down to Sunderland.

The Metro electrification reduced clearances so main line stock can't run, except perhaps between Benton and Bank Foot which was still used by freight at the time Metro started running. However I think the connection at Benton has now been taken out.

No, not since Metro arrived. Manors is in Newcastle and Cramlington is in Northumberland - there's nothing in between.

Though we live in hope that one day in the not too distant future passenger services are reintroduced to the ABT and there will be a station at Northumberland Park.

Except that they're not. When the Metropolitan County Councils were abolished, some functions were transferred to joint boards and other authorities (e.g. Integrated Transport Authorities, etc.). So whilst a Metropolitan Borough is similar to a Unitary Authority - its not the same.

(Similarly a London Borough is another type of local authority - with different powers and areas of competence than a Metropolitan Borough or a Unitary Authority.)

If we're allowed second-tier LAs, then you can have East Dorset, Torridge, West Somerset and East Northants.

The neighbouring administrative region to the north is the Scottish Borders and it has no stations (not in current use, though the ECML passes through and the Borders Railway may open sometime soon).

The connection to the ECML was taken out years ago, but the former reversing sidings have been recently removed.
