The biggest picture is why trains from East Anglia to the Midlands are being routed via London in the first place. An East-West electric spine is much needed both for more direct freight routings and to release capacity for passenger services in London.

The biggest picture is why trains from East Anglia to the Midlands are being routed via London in the first place. An East-West electric spine is much needed both for more direct freight routings and to release capacity for passenger services in London.
With this train, as it was diesel-hauled, I wonder why it was going via London in the first place, indeed. Trains that aren’t worked by electrics should run via Peterborough during the day.

That costs money, the cheapest way of doing something is to not build anything at all if you can already do it.

it wouldnt actually release much capacity on the North London line.

But diverting all Felixstowe - W Mids and North West trains via Ely would require significant expenditure at Ely, between Ely and Peterboro’, and in the Leicester area.
