North London Line badge

Been going through my boxes of nostalgia/junk (delete as applicable) and came across this North London Line badge. Got mine on an outer London railtour that was supposed to be a protest against the building of the M25. The basis of the protest that there were suitable lines around London on which rail could absorb the lorry traffic that the M25 was to be built for.

I knew that the pretext of the railtour wouldn't make a blind bit of difference to the building of the motorway - but it did cover a good number of rare lines!

Interesting. I wonder the rail capacity that would be required to take modern day freight usage of the M25. Am having difficulties visualising it.

Plus the North London Line nowadays already has lots of freight traffic anyway

Nowhere near as much as it had in the 1950s and 1960s. But much of the capacity has been removed.

Riding on one of the West Somerset's DMUS last week (1st generation, class not noted), it had North London Line maps in the passenger saloon. It must be a long time since that ran there!

IIRC, the DMU used on the West Somerset is a class 115/117 hybrid....so I suspect that it may have been one of the Reading-based 117s that were used on the Gospel Oak - Barking line prior to the arrival of the class 150 sprinters.

Almost certainly a class 117 - we had 10 x 2 car sets allocated in the late 1990's , primarily for the Gospel Oak - Barking line - and maintained at BY depot. (replaced by 150/1 eventually)
