Edited to add the blog post from the Member of the Senedd, Janet French-Saunders:

Janet Finch-Saunders, Member of the Welsh Parliament for Aberconwy, has spoken of her delight at the fact that Transport for Wales have agreed to fund the works to change the name of North Llanrwst railway station to “North Llanrwst and Trefriw”.

Following a collaborative effort between the Trefriw Community Council and the local community, I am proud to announce that Transport for Wales will fully fund the redesign and renaming of Llanrwst North Train Station signage. This decision comes after months of productive campaigning by the Community Council and residents who expressed the need for updated, more representative station branding.

Apparently there's going to be some local art work installed in the station.

Oh dear! Google maps shows a 1.2 mile walk from the village to North Llanrwst via a country lane and a footbridge over the Conwy taking 26 minutes.

I don't know Llanrwst, but Google maps is quite unreliable on rural footpaths, either ignoring well used ones, or inventing ones that aren't there. Near me, its walking directions show a footpath route that simply doesn't exist and never has. As the pop-up box says "Use caution - walking directions may not always reflect real-world conditions" ;)

Up the creek
Streetview does appear to show narrow lanes on either side of a pedestrian bridge. As it is Streetview it can’t go right down to, or even across, the bridge, but it does look like a complete route. Of course, being the Conwy valley, the bridge may not be useable.

EDIT: The ‘close up’ view of the bridge is from 2009 and the more distant one from 2011. A lot has changed in the valley, but it appears to still be in use. (Oddly, Google gives its busiest time as around 4 a.m.)

There is a well surfaced (tarmac), wide path that runs just about directly from Llanrwst North to the centre of Trefriw, via a suspension bridge over the Conwy. It makes sense to update the name of this station, considering "Dolgarrog" is in a similar position/distance on the opposite side of the river to the village it serves.

Just... why? Its miles away.

Next week - Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch becomes Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch Menai Parkway.

It's only a 1.2 mile level walk/bike, about 15-20 mins at a decent pace and is busy with walkers/bikes, both leisure and commuting to work/shops. It makes sense to me as the station serves and is directly connected to the 2 main settlements in that part of the Conwy valley. Trefriw also has a fair significant tourist pull, so perhaps the aim is partly to try to tempt some of them on to the rail network?

On your premise, should Dolgarrog be renamed to "Plas Maenan"?

The station in your example is known by NR as Llanfairpwll, the town being Llanfair Pwllgwyngyll these days, the other Victorian rubbish was dropped many years ago, locals certainly never used it.

There's plenty of examples of station names across the network as serving x, y, z, so why not North Llanrwst for Trefriw?

Indeed. Stations like 'Llanbister Road' are a good five or so miles distant from Llanbister village, which it perhaps purports to serve. Similarly Dent station and Dent village.

Menai Bridge Parkway would be a more useful name for the station (the village itself is smaller than the name) but who would want to let go of that? :)

The station signs still have the full thing.

My mother was brought up nearby. She and everyone else in the area always referred to it as “Llanfair P.G.” The extended name was (she said) a bit of Victorian nonsense to encourage tourism and that when she was young visitors used to buy souvenir platform tickets that were 6 inches long.

What were the most recent stations to be renamed? Dunfermline getting city status and Heathrow Terminal 1 closing are the two recent(ish) events causing station name changes I can think of.

Sure we were told that renaming things costs a surprisingly large amount of money - is this really the best use of the funds available?
