I get free travel on the Northern network on account of what I do, and I was wondering, could I buy a single from Newcastle to Leeds, begin my journey at Darlington and go Darlington to Leeds, and then later do the remaining portion, Newcastle to Darlington, a couple of hours later?

No. You can't use a single ticket in that way. You would need to buy two single tickets, from Darlington to York/Leeds and from Newcastle to Darlington.

With a North East Round Robin I would say yes if you start using it at Darlington.

So you would get a single from Newcastle to Darlington. Start using the North East Round Robin there then go to Leeds, Carlisle, Newcastle and back to Darlington.
