Hi, does anybody know hoe many units Northern have based at Heaton for use around the North East. Developed new timetable for them but need to know if they have the 17 units I need to make it work.
Cheers!

Only 142s and 156s are actually allocated there; other classes go for maintenence etc from time to time. Not sure of the exact numbers tho.

156438, 156443, 156444, 156448, 156451, 156454, 156463, 156469, 156475, 156479, 156480, 156481, 156484, 156490. These units also works Carlisle - Lancaster via Barrow, and Lancaster to Morecambe shuttles aside from the normal Heaton allocated diagrams.

obviously the above units do make there way across to Manchester and Liverpool, this seems to be if they have been to Allerton depot though.

hope this helps.

ps - too many 142 unit numbers to post.

off the top of my head the 142's usually based at Heaton are 142015/016/017/018/019/020/021/022/023/024/025/026/027/029/065/066/067/068/070/071/078/079/084/086/087/088/089/090/091/092/093/094/095/096

But plenty can be found in the Leeds area on a daily basis but the ones listed above are what are Heaton based

It looks like there's about 35 pacers there. I would be interested in this timetable.

Heaton 142079 was working a Man Vic-Preston and Allerton 156452 was doing the Metrocentre-Morpeth runs a few weeks back so this clearly changes a lot.

In addition, 142050 is a Heaton one and 142064 also appears around Newcastle regularly.

You get plenty of the Heaton units working over in the north west and also plenty of ex north west and ex Mersey units around south / west Yorkshire. Curious to know how many Newton Heath based units make it up to the Newcastle North East area, plenty make it through to Leeds and Sheffield but some of them will be on Newton Heath diagrams. Every weekday the is a booked empty stock service from York to Heaton and back ( I believe it runs knaresbrough to Heaton via reversal In York as an empty stock and the southbound service is in passenger service between Newcastle and Darlington). York crews work this between Newcastle and York and Newcastle crews take it to/from Heaton. The headcode of the northbound one off the top of my head is 5A60 as it follows 2A60 lds - knaresbrough. They are both booked to be worked by 142s and is the main way of getting 142s over the gap in the north east network between Darlington and York.

The York - Heaton movement sometimes includes 144s and 150s, but these are then returned back to Yorkshire as Northern drivers and guards in the NE do not sign them.

142063 appeared on the 1130 Newcastle-Metrocentre today, seemed quite unusual. A Newton Heath one?

Just a note that the Morpeth trains run to Metrocentre and normally inter-work with the Metrocentre shuttles before going back to Morpeth during the day. The exceptions being Early Mornings and Late Evenings.

A typical example would be-

1049 Morpeth-Metrocentre 1122
1131 Metrocentre-Newcastle 1139
1144 Newcastle-Metrocentre 1152
1202 Metrocentre-Morpeth 1235

Hope this helps :)

Some good ideas as the North East diagrams do need a refresh BUT…..

a) You’ve forgot to say which services you’re diagramming a 156 or 142 and how many of each you are using on a daily basis
b) No Whitby line??
c) Not taken into account the extensions off the Tyne Valley line to / from Dumfries and Glasgow also 1 additional extension TO Whitehaven (I’m sure that’s one of the Franchise terms)
d) The early Tyne Valley services could do with more turnaround time at Carlsile 6 / 7 minutes is not enough especially in leaf fall
e) If running a 0555 Newcastle to Carlisle surely it should be all stops no point an early express if others may want to use it
f) 0750 Hexham to Newcastle needs to be 2 sets, very busy service as a 2 x 142 as it is, no consolation saying the 0856 arrival at NCL is 2 sets as people want to be at work at 9
g) Need to state where units are coming ECS to and from to check everything adds up at the end of the night
h) 1 HLOS unit to be spare at Darlington for most of the day too remember
i) Services between Newcastle and Nunthorpe via the coast don’t need double sets, used to be common place for the conductor to lock one half of the 0745 Hexham to Nunthorpe double 142 out between Newcastle and Nunthorpe as it was very quiet
j) 0839 from Sunderland (0726 from Nunthorpe) would struggle to make PPM most days as it would follow the 0835 Metro from Sunderland (that isn’t timetabled to reach Pelaw Metro Jn until 0852 and you have the 0839 getting to Heworth at 0851 that won’t work

Sorry if any of that sounds harsh, I do agree some of the services do need looked at and current connections are rubbish but you need to do a timetable along with a trial set of unit diagram and see what comes out at the end

Hi, I left whitby line out as it needs no altering. It wasn't really a timetable for immediate use, maybe in few years when more DMU's become cascaded. So didn't allocate unit types.
I left out through trains from South West Scotland to Newcastle has I wonder if they will still continue in years to come with the franchisees.
Morpeth to Metrocentre services are scaled back to Newcastle has I didn't think Metrocentre needed 4 tph. Also these units sitting in Newcastle can be used as back up to restart coastal services if they are running late as per now.
Some services up the coast are really busy and need strengthening, as does the 1028 Whitby service and the 1600 return.
I take your points thats why I put it out there, for feedback :)
I had 4 units stabled at Darlington overnight.

No problems. As I say its something I've looked at myself. The way I went about it and the reason was to

a) turn the Hexham - Nunthorpe and Carlisle - Newcastle into Hexham to Newcastle and Carlisle to Nunthorpe due to better service resiliency for the coast services due to 30 min turnarounds (roughly) at Carlisle. Also means you can target your better stock for the longer distance trips. However you have to path through Metros / Grand Centrals also catering for the Scotrail services too. Quite often the same crew work forward from Hexham all way to Nunthorpe and with lack of spare crew at present restarting isn't always possible.

b) your right, on a weekday the majority of MetroCentre shuttles need not run but I dont think the people of Morpeth and SENRUG would take kindly to their service being truncated, plus the units going to be sat in Newcastle anyway for nearly an hour. The reason Metrocentre gets 4 trains an hour is because of a) probably Nexus Funding and b) the will to run the Morpeth service through to MetroCentre but cant hold it at Swalwell Jn for 30 mins
