North Downs Line loses first class

Has been like it for a long time. It was originally because of the Thames Valley services being overcrowed. There's no point on Thames Valley services having a classified first class anyway because it's driver only operated.

Sometimes, but not all the time. To extend my answer, trains on the route should not be (or any other route) DOO. Never been a supporter of DOO.

I've noticed today that the timetable now has first class above some services during the week but nothing for Saturday and Sunday.

I'm on a stopping train to Redhill and just asked the guard if it was first class and they said yes. Perhaps they didn't quite understand my question or simply thought if it says first class on the door then it must be. I mean I'm sure that is what most passengers would think.

I'm not going to try and sit in it mind you.

Had I checked the timetable in advance I would have done without asking.

AIUI from others on these forums with knowledge of the rules, 1st is 1st is 1st, unless it is explicitly declassified, regardless of the presence or absence of a 1 at the top of the timetable column for that service. In other words, just because the timetable doesn't say that the train does have 1st class seating, that doesn't preclude that it may have first class seating, and, if it does, then that 1st class accommodation may only be occupied by those with a first class ticket. It may be that my understanding is incorrect, however …

A solution would be to add 1 in the timetable. Otherwise you may end up with empty first class carriage as people read no first class so don't buy a first class ticket.

More likely is someone buying a first class ticket when train has no first class.

I'd ask, "Is first class declassified on this train?" eliminating any ambiguity in the question.
