Do any trains use this now? A grade separated junction built to enable coal trains, travelling from Immingham to Drax and other power stations in the region, to cross the ECML it was expected to handle 30 trains a day in each direction.

Are you talking about the flyover at Joan Croft junction (where the line to Pontefract branches off the Main ECML)? If so, very few use it. It's not a grade-separated junction in the normal sense - the junctions themselves are all at-grade, but it does deconflict east-west traffic from north-south traffic. I think it's normally called the Applehurst flyover.

Further to the above replies, the Immingham to Drax workings still run, but they convey biomass these days rather than coal!

Firstly, this would have required significant works to construct and connect to the ECML south/up line. Second, it was simply not required, mainly because the whole point of the new link was to take freight (coal) traffic from the East Coast docks to the Yorkshire Power stations without using the ECML, but also because traffic from the docks that needs to head South can already go straight to Doncaster on the Scunthorpe lines from Stainforth Jn.

The line to Pontefract (actually Knottingley) leaves the ECML at Shaftholme Jn. And although not a grade separated junction, the whole point of the new chord was to allow grade separation by removing Northbound freight from the ECML. And I've never heard it called the Applehurst flyover....

Now that’s interesting. It’s shown on Google Maps but is completely absent (not even under construction) on satellite view. Apple Maps’ satellite view shows it in all its glory though.

I had no idea Google was so out of date. OK it’s not a constantly changing urban area with a high priority for being kept up to date, but it’s hardly the total back end of beyond either.

Google maps varies considerably around the country as regards image dates. I was looking at a location in South Wales yesterday where the satellite image was only a few months old but the streetview was over 10 years old. If you didn't know this, you would have thought that you were looking at two different places as nearly all the buildings in the area had been demolished in the interim.

ps this is unusual though, most streetviews are under 5 years old.
