a day return to mexbro changing at wakefield and doncaster?

There doesn't appear to be a fare for that journey in brfares, EC, or trainscanbecheaper. National Rail suggests buying a Freedom of the North East 4 day in 8 rover for £88!

How about WY Train Day Rover (£6.60) and SY Day Tripper (£6.30).
ONLY valid on Northern on cross boundary journeys I.e. Not on XC or EC.
WY ticket can be purchased from train conductor (but not if you join at a staffed station), so OK from Normanton. But SY ticket is not available from train conductor, only bus drives and staffed stations.
Pontefract stations (Monkhill) any permitted CDR (off peak day return) is £10.30. I haven't checked routing guide but should be valid Grand Central to Doncaster, Mexborough to Sheffield. And return Sheffield to Wakefield and Pontefract Monkhill. You would need to get to Ponti of course!
Normanton to Sheffield CDR is £9.30. This is probably not valid via Doncaster, but to get to Mexborough travel Normanton, Wakefield Kirkgate, Swinton. Then buy ticket from booking office Swinton to Mexborough (£2.60 CDR) or Doncaster (£4.00). Obviously Sheffield ticket is valid to return on direct train via Barnsley to normanton

The most straightforward ticket permitting this would be something like Woodlesford - Chinley. Unfortunatrly it's not exactly cheap at £20.50.
There are some more ahem 'offbeat', and cheaper, tickets that permit the use of CE, but they are likely to raise an eyebrow or two....

This is Normanton WY isn't it?
Can't beat the above suggestions, but if you particularly wanted to travel from Wakefield westgate to Doncaster on EC then a Leeds-Sheffield any permitted £16.10 will allow via Doncaster one way and via Barnsley the other.
