The kettle and mk1 which stood in for the Whitby - Middlesbrough service a couple of years ago must be up there !

The steam locomotive and tour working that covered for the cancelled SWT train between Bournemouth and Weymouth (I think) about 15 years ago, by carrying regular passengers by calling additionally at intermediate stops. BR Standard 5 73096 was the locomotive, with a rake of green Mk2s. Reports had it that several passengers had not noticed anything out of the ordinary when they boarded!

I was going to quote EPBs in the 80s all the way down to Portsmouth in place of CIGs and VEPs, but I think the above trumps that just a bit !!!

I believe it was a snowy day in Kent a few years ago. Southeastern services out to Dartford were severely disrupted, so Tornado (or A N Other steam loco) stopped to carry the regular punters.

The day of the Bletchley derailment saw a Pendolino or two pressed into action on Euston-Tring stoppers as most LM units were trapped in Bletchley sidings.

How about this from yesterday, taken from the Isle of Wight Steam Railway website:

Just before 11am this morning the Island Line train heading for Ryde failed with what appeared to be a total power failure at Smallbrook Junction. At the time it happened the Isle of Wight Steam Railway train was also at Smallbrook Junction on the opposite platform.

The steam train was held whilst a decision was made to de-train the 20 Island Line passengers who were transported by steam train to Havenstreet, where waiting taxis took the passengers on to Ryde.

Peter Vail, General Manager of the Isle of Wight Steam Railway commented “We were only too pleased to be of assistance. It was a little ironic that our locomotive in service is the newly restored Ivatt 41298 which was built in 1951. This is modern technology compared to the 1938 tube stock operated by Island Line.”

Why did they need to do this? Because Smallbrook Junction is just an exchange platform, with no road access.

Last year, an evening Westbury - Bristol stopping service was formed of a HST vice the usual 150!

I'm sure I remember reading of passengers being flown (may be in Norway?) when a rail bridge was out of action and there was no suitable road. Has it ever happened here?

I doubt it, except for perhaps sleeper cancellations to Scotland?
