Non TOC work in station

Afternoon.

On Monday I have a trial at a well known coffee shop chain at their Liverpool Lime Street based shop.

If all goes well, will this make it any easier to find employment with an actual TOC?

Personally I doubt it. However, you will more than likely get to know the train crew and staff that come into your establishment and they can tell you when certain vacancies arise and may give advice.

You will get to know the service at your station and that may help. I imagine working in the establishment will also give you cash handling skills and customer service skills and the like. So in many ways it will help!

Is it AMT coffee, god there hot chocolate with cream has surely added a stone to my weight in the past. Used to enjoy it when working a Robert up to Crime St in the days of Central.

Find out who the managers are and keep them sweet with coffee and cakes and you may just win them over

a barista at the local costa outlet got to know about the gateline job, was taken on and impressed enough to be considered for nightshift with the company hopefully leading to eventual day job on the platform (ok does that read like upward or downward career?) good luck anyway.

Yes it will!.Make a note of things you do,helping people out,good customer service, that sort of thing and then look on Virgin's website for CSAs or on train Hosts,the expierience you gain at this job will be invaluable.

I agree, keep favour with the other station staff
Ask if there are local "internal" vacancies and where they are advertised
If they are in restricted areas ask if you can have access, but be poilte and don't pressurise

Once you've been working there for three months then it should greatly work in your favour, "as a stepping stone to working in a similar environment on train services"
Therefore also consider looking at Virgin Trains hosts, trolley services, etc

With regard to Merseyrail, the local TOC for the OP, a young lady who worked in one of the outlets at Lime Street mainline got a barrier job, (Station Assistant). I believe it's more the experience you get (cash handling, customer service, even TRANSEC still applies), it makes you more attractive to potential employers, (not just the "railway").

I can certainly agree 100% with this post, following my own personal experience of a Virgin 'selection event' for an onboard CSA position.

The two guys who got it had already worked for various TOCs before, pipping myself and the other 'finalist' to the post.

I now work for a major highstreet bank, which I hope will give me a better chance of getting myself a job with a TOC next time around.

Sorry to disappoint but AMT isn't there any more! It was replaced in the redevelopments by a small Nero hut.

If this is the cute blonde I'm thinking of, she's also been in training for ticket selling, so maybe it is the way to go!
