Does anyone know why there are a few Edin to Euston services at the moment that seem to stop everywhere including New St?

Also heard there was a Carlisle to Euston train this morning?

The 1452 is the combination of an EDB-BHM and BHM-EUS service with a significant layover in New Street. I wasn't aware that it was currently operating however.

There is an early morning CAR-EUS service which runs empty from Polmadie without heading into Glasgow first. The set when it arrives in London steps up into gaps left by extra morning services. If it ran later by heading to Glasgow first, it wouldn't be able to do this. If the train left Polmadie earlier, there is a possibility a) of it being cancelled frequently as it won't have had allocated maintenance time at Polmadie b) the driver being over hours on his diagram for the day.

During the Christmas period (not sure about now) Virgin ran the 1052 (I think) and the 1452 off Edinburgh through to Euston using 390s. The incoming working was the 0843 off Euston which joined the 0843 EUS - BHM and 1020 BHM - EDB. There was also a 1343 from Euston to Glasgow via Birmingham arriving at 1919. I'm not sure if there was a 0643 to Edinburgh from Euston

the Edin to Euston were still running as of yesterday

and the Carlisle - London train was scheduled and arrived into Wigan five mins after the Glasgow to Euston train, and did so. So why only a five min gap? extra train?

i think it left Carlisle at 10.42

ive never seen this train before?

Don't you agree that these services should run all year round as it would restore through services between Scotland and the West Midland's that have been axed in recent years as well as a choice to travel a different way to London? These services would be provided by having the 0550,0800,1000,1200,1400,1600 and 1800 Glasgow Central to Birmingham New Street extended to London Euston as well as having the 0652,0852,1052,1252,1452 and 1652 Edinburgh to Birmingham New Street extended to London Euston providing an alternative route to London. In the opposite direction the 0720,0920,1120,1320,1520,1720 and 1920 Birmingham New Street to Glasgow Central would start at London Euston at 43 minutes past the hour with the 0620,0820,1020,1220,1420,1620 and 1820 Birmingham New Street to Edinburgh services starting at Euston at 43 minutes past the hour.Wouldn't you agree that these services would provide an alternative route to London as well as restoring direct links between Scotland and the West Midlands that have been sadly axed in recent years?

The biggest problem Damien is lack of Pendolino's but it would be a useful thing to do. Others have said before that extending the Manchester services to Scotland could also be useful (again no Pendo's), but it would give options such as Stoke-on-Trent & Stockport- Scotland by a direct train and London - Bolton.

Why not start the service at Motherwell then? And you can have an access point with a connection from Central?

No crew until Carlisle I think - they come up from Preston early morning.

I can see where you're coming from about Motherwell but with East Coast axing direct trains from Glasgow and Motherwell to London King's Cross wouldn't it be a good idea to start them from Glasgow?

I can see where you're coming from but Transpennine Express already operate Manchester to Scotland services and they provide a Bolton and Chorley to Scotland service, would Virgin call at Chorley?

It's little things like this that should be flagged up for sponsorship by Transport Scotland.

The potential for fairly "deprived" areas such as Motherwell, Carstairs & Lockerbie all having a potential 09.04 arrival in Euston must surely count for a few brownie points for domestic or even european funding.

Perhaps...

"Welcome to the 05.00 Virgin service from Motherwell to London Euston sponsored by Transport Scotland. Your Scotrail Hosts for this service will be with you until Carlisle..."

By "direct links between Scotland and the West Midlands that have been sadly axed in recent years" I presume you are only talking about Birmingham International and Coventry? The service from Edinburgh/Glasgow to Birmingham New Street today is better than its ever been - hourly on the East Coast and hourly on the West Coast.

I agree it'd have some uses, in extending the Euston - Wolves to Edinburgh/Glasgow, especially if it was timed not to be overtaken by the Euston - Glasgow 390 (so providing a second train each hour to Preston/ Carlisle etc, albeit a slower one).

Unless the xx30s to Glasgows were slowed down, the one via Birmingham would have to be overtaken. Without the 12 minute dwell time at New St, it would be right behind the fast pendo anyway

Yes,I mean Birmingham International and Coventry! There are no longer any direct trains between these destinations and Scotland since the Bournemouth's now run to Manchester, leaving the likes of Crewe,Warrington,Wigan,Preston,Lancaster in the North West of England as well as Glasgow and Edinburgh in Scotland without direct trains to these places.Remember when Carlisle,Penrith,Oxenholme,Lancaster,Preston,Wigan and Warrington all lost crosscountry services in December 2007? That's what I mean!

It can be done now with a simple change?

That can of worms

Changing trains is fine if connections can be relied on, but lets say you are travelling from Bournemouth to Glasgow, you miss your connection at Wolverhampton because your first train is 10 minutes late you are not happy that you now have to wait 1 hour for your next train and have an additional change at Carlisle (as the train is going to Edinburgh not Glasgow as they alternate)

People will always prefer a direct train, I know that isn't offered but if you used to have one and you have lost it you will always look at it as a backwards step.

It is that exact reason people heading to London from Lincoln drive to Newark rather than use the local service, if you miss the connection you are quicker driving than waiting for the next one, if it happens a few times you just give up on rail and hit the roads!

I understand that people prefer direct trains, but someone is seriously complaining that Penrith doesn't have a direct train to Birmingham International? Does that mean there should be a direct London - Berlin train every 30 minutes because it'd be handy for my summer holiday?

I actually caught the 1452 on Friday 7th January and this explains why it stopped at Sandwell & Dudley (where I was bound for) normally have to change at Wolverhampton.

I was in the station that day and did a double take when I heard the announcer state "Sandwell & Dudley"

I can remember the 1010 pendo that used to run to EUS for a few years. Virgin missed a beat there as an expansion of capital to capital services via the WCM could have brought genuine competition back to the railways for the first time since the railway races of 1895

I used to regularly take the 0940 ex GLC to EUS - a great service that only stopped at CAR & PRE. Now if it was me I'd have swapped the stopping patterns of these trains to offer a fast alternative to the ECM direct from the Scottish Capital.
