Prior to electrification I don't think there were any non-stop trains.
Way back in the steam era, for a while, locos were changed at Kingmoor, with no booked passenger stops at Carlisle (or anywhere else between Euston & Glasgow). Mainly the up/down "Royal Scots" if I recall correctly. There was also an earlier period when they sometimes changed locos in Carnforth loop.
