Non-stop through Carlisle.

Prior to electrification I don't think there were any non-stop trains.

Way back in the steam era, for a while, locos were changed at Kingmoor, with no booked passenger stops at Carlisle (or anywhere else between Euston & Glasgow). Mainly the up/down "Royal Scots" if I recall correctly. There was also an earlier period when they sometimes changed locos in Carnforth loop.

True. There was an occasion when my driver went to the signal post telephone to challenge the signalman as to why we had been stopped at Usan Jn. on his way back he fell & twisted his ankle quite badly.

I informed him that had he checked the WTT he would have noticed that we were booked to wait there for a few minutes and that would have saved him climbing down to the ballast. I discovered later, however, that it is policy for the driver to immediately challenge a red signal regardless of whether or not one is booked to wait.

So the Fort William Highland sleeper stops (but doesnt) in Carlisle. Mike395 in post 13 tells me this.

So where does one get this information from given it isnt a passenger stop and so not on a public timetable?

I may mean how do you use opentraintimes (as per post no.2 from lewisrday) or something else similar - thanks.

On opentraintimes, enter the station (just one will suffice, or you can filter it by entering two stations), date and time you wish to see services for, then find a service (e.g. the sleeper) by looking at times and destinations, then click on the 'I' at the left hand side to load the service details. At the top of the screen is button with cogs on it, click on that and it takes you to 'Advanced mode' and you can see more details, including timing points, stations passing, waiting times etc.

My recollection from prior to electrification, passenger wise Scottish depots did not sign south of Carlisle, and likewise men from English depots south of Carlisle did not go north of Carlisle. I'm willing to be corrected however.

Sorry but are you saying it quite often stops at Lancaster, or Carlisle?

It often stops at Carlisle after passengers for Lancaster have gone to find the guard, sorry train manager, after whizzing non stop through Lancaster.
