Just when you think that Labour and the Left Wing media cannot become more hypocritical, along comes something else to prove just how stomach churningly hypocritical the whole pack are.

You will of course be familiar with the long term insinuations and suggestions made by Labour MPs, sympathisers and the general Left Wing media about Lord Ashcroft being a Conservative Party doner who is not domiciled in the UK for tax purposes ?

He has now confirmed that in fact he does pay tax on his UK earnings, but that has not stopped the likes of the Grauniad, the Mirror, the Independent, (and indeed a Labour MP writing in that paper) from shouting and bawling about how bad all of this is.

So may may be forgiven for thinking that Labour is whiter than white ?

Far from it, indeed the situation over Labour is far worse, and the stench of hypocricy is stomach churning.

A few facts that the Left Wing (and Labour) omit to reveal, and indicative of the moral values they hoild by virtue of that.

Fact

Lord Ashcroft attended the House of Lords at total of 285 times between 2001 and 2008. He never claimed a penny in expenses.

Lord Paul however the multi-millionaire Labour Non Dom attended 1047 times and claimed £281,263 - £405.58 a visit.

While Lord Ashcroft was setting up the extremely successful Crimestoppers organisation, Lord Paul was raiding the pension funds of hardworking British steel workers as a means of attaining his wealth and supporting Labour with donations

Fact
Lord Ashcroft has given £5,160,915 to the Conservatives since 2001

Lords Paul, Mittal and Cohen have given £6,734,250, indeed for £14m Mittal obtained the services of Bliar to lobby for his private company. The fact that everyone on the Left is keeping quiet about is that NONE of these three are domiciled here for tax, they pay NO tax to the UK. They are Non-Doms

So it is a scandal for a millionaire to give to Conservative Party funds, yet it is OK for NON-DOM Labour Lords to give more to Labour :roll::roll:

Since 2001, Labour has accepted more than £10million from eight donors reported to be 'non-doms'.

Lord Paul has given £45,000 to Gordon Brown's leadership campaign.

A close friend of the Prime Minister and appointed to the Privy Council last summer, he once declared: 'If there is an election and the money is wanted, whatever I can pay, I will pay.'

Lord Paul was born in India and appears in 88th place on the Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated family fortune of £500millon.
He moved to London in the 1960s, taking over the overseas arm of the family's steel business. He and his family own several homes in a prime block near Oxford Street worth a total of £14million. It is thus rather difficult to see how he cannot be resident in the UK.

Steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal, said to be the third richest man in the world and reportedly a non-dom, has given £4.125million to Labour.

One of the world's leading private equity investors, Sir Ronald Cohen, who has handed Labour £2.55million, has refused to clarify his tax status publicly. Retired businessman Sir Christopher Ondaatje, who has given £1.7million to Labour, has refused to reveal his tax status but has been reported to be a non-dom.

Sir Gulam Noon, known as the Curry King for selling 1.5million Indian ready-meals a week in Britain, has given £532,826 to Labour, and is also reported to be a non-dom.

Other reported non-dom donors include former hedge fund manager William Bollinger, who has given £510,725, car dealer Mahmoud Khayami, who has given £985,000, and computer tycoon Dr David Potter, who has given £90,000

It would be nice to think that the same questions that were posed by those on the Left today will now be posed to Labour tomorrow. I for one however shall not be holding my breath as there are obviously very different rules for Labour donating Non Doms

In the interests of political balance, are the liberal dimocrats exempt from all this non-dom nonsense?

Perhaps the real issue is that Lord Ashcroft is a deputy chairman of the Conservative Party while the other Lords you mention are just donors. Therefore there is no hypocrisy. It's ludicrous to suggest a political party should deny money just because the donor is a non-dom, he or she has not broken any laws. Therefore, it not really of relevance for the press to mention the others.

Of course Lord Ashcroft he pays tax on UK earnings - this is required even of non-doms. The issue is of foreign income and foreign capital gains.

You make a good point about the issue of peerage of non-doms. I would definitely be in favour of legislation that required all peers are domiciled, along with spending a statutory minimum time resident in UK, because I think that this is required in order for the then to adequately fulfill their role in representing UK nationals.

No they took money from a convicted fraudster and have refused to pay this back. So much for THEIR morals.

They also have money donated by Non Doms.

The Liberal Democrats have demonstrated that the money was taken in good faith. The allegations are between the convict and and the victims and not the party and the victims. Would you expect any shop at which the convict shopped at to return any money that may be linked to that obtained by fraud, any rail company to return any fare-box earnings or any charity to return any donations? If not, then you'll have to demonstrate why a party donation isn't comparable.

They also have money donated by Non Doms.
Being a non-dom is a legal status. Are there any non-doms that spend most of their time living in Britain that work on Liberal Democrat policy?

You brush over the whole NonDom issue by suggesting that it is only a problem because of Lord Ashcroft's position.

Unlike many of the Labour Non Doms, he is actually a citizen of this Country and does pay tax on UK earnings. How many of Labour's Non Doms are citizens, and how many actually pay tax on their UK earnings, and how many avoid tax by using "Offshore" tax avoidance schemes ?

How many of these have received their honours by virtue of having donated to Labour ?

THAT is the bigger question and why the whole issue is clouded in Left wing and Liberal hypocricy.

Well said Old Timer. I was begining to think I was the only one to think this.

If I work in this country, I expect and would pay UK (full) taxes on it, If I earn money trading in Germany , I expect to pay the current German taxes on it etc.

Where's the problem. Lord Ashcroft is a UK resident and doesn't use legal tax avoidance schemes, doesn't claim expenses ( as others do) and gives up his time to attend the house of Lords.

Lets face it, half of Bradford is non-dom for tax purposes on their income, and no one says a word about that.

You keep referring to Labour as "left wing". When did this happen?

I was thinking exactly the same thing, as far as i am aware we have never had a Left Wing Labour party.

One thing i didnt know was that OT reads the Morning Star (left wing but anti Labour), or the socialist Worker (again Left Wing but anti Labour) or a paper that i had delivered to me today called the Socialist (also Left Wing and anti Labour) So pary do tell what other Left Wing and Labour supporting Press is there?

You obviously don't know or talk to any Labour MPs or Constituency staff then. They pretty much all describe themselves as on the Left.

I guess I must visit Labour clubs and talk to Labour people obviously much more than you do ?

I would have thought that was quite obvious ? Do I really need to tell you ?

The Mirror
Sunday Mirror
Guardian
The Independent (in recent years)

Papers which have recently changed "allegiance"

Times
Sunday Times
Sun
News of the World

In the media it is quite clear that the BBC is wholly biased through the number of pro-Labour stories they "spin" and the number of Labour scandals andmisdemeanours that they ignore or brush off, for example Harman's mobile phone driving charge, Labour Non Doms, Labour MPs being charged by the Police.

Had that been Conservative members then there would have been days and days of "analysis" and comment.

Anyway we are straying off topic. Maybe both of you would wish to comment on the original post ???

Would this have anything to do with them all being owned by News Corp?
Murdoch is simply interested in his own success and doesn't give a flying **** about democracy.

The influence that the media now has over our Political system is pernicious and damages our electoral system.

I find it outrageous that somebody like Murdoch can actually dictate the colour of the UK Government, and equally sad that so many of the voting population should be so stupid as to be influenced to vote without giving any rational thought to the outcome of their actions.

Since when as the left wing media included the Telegraph, that is where i got my info on Lord Ashcroft.

Of course they also mention that Lord Paul gave the Labour Party £69,000. So that equals a balanced view.

I haven't brushed over the issue, and I stand on your side in terms of condemning the peerage of any non-domicile. The fact is, Lord Ashcroft's revelation is far newsworthy, and as I demonstrated, far more hypocritical given his unique role compared to those others you mentioned.

I'm sure HMRC would be very interested if your allegations of Labour peers not paying income tax on UK earnings actually stood up.

So two Non Doms give money to Political Parties, but only the Conservative Party is subject to villification ?

Labour have a whole series of Non Doms who have contributed far more in total than Ashcroft has and been rewarded with peerages and preferrment as a result. Why for example was Paul elevated to Privvy Councillor status ?

Even the Lib Dems have taken money from Non Doms.

My point about the Leftist media is that they have chosen to ignore Labour and Lib Dem Non Doms, seeking only to concentrate on the Conservatives. THAT is the hypocricy.

If you had read my previous posts properly you would have read that these people have very efficient (and legal) means of avoiding paying tax here. Loopholes that Labour promised in Opposition to close and then chose not to because it would have affected their patrons and donors.

Labour is quite happy to take money from those who actually take all and contribute little to the UK. Nothing is being said in the Leftist media about that. I wonder why ?

At least Ashcroft pays tax in the UK on his UK earnings, a fact that appears to being lost in the various distortions being peddled.

These two are more aligned with the Lib Dems now.
Yes, I don't know if you have noticed how they have recently started to savage Labour, whereas before they were like a little puppy dog, obedient to the party line and quite happy to roll over and be stroked.

That is an element I find quite stomach churning, changing allegance when they realise they are not on the winning side anymore.

Incredibly they ran an article yesterday supportive of the Conservative approach to the economy. It quite put me off my lunch.....

I don't read it, but I believe The Independent was "tending towards" supporting the Liberal Democrats in 2005. Certainly in a 2004 poll by MORI, there were more readers who supported the Liberal Democrats (39%) than Labour (36%).

But anyway, newspapers usually change their views to support the "winning side", The Times and The Sun for example. As you pointed out earlier though, The Daily Mirror will remain Labour to the bitter end (not long now!), in the same way your friends at The Daily Mail will never move away from the Conservative party. Also, the newspaper's actual stance is not always represented through the opinion pages; Vince Cable has written for The Daily Mail and Michael Gove has written for The Guardian.
