Harrow on the hill have bulb lit boards that have surely been there for decades.

They were installed in 1960. The ones at Harrow are ideal for passengers. You never know which platform your next fast Amersham/Chesham service will arrive at, so indicators on platforms 3 and 4 need to be clear enough to allow them to be visible on platform 1 and vice versa.

Dot Matrix signs wouldn't be able to perform this task as well.

I presume these signs are also used for the Chiltern Railways services to Aylesbury - but do they have Aylesbury Vale Parkway on the boards. And do London Underground trains ever use platforms 1 or 2 at Harrow-on-the-Hill?

Yes, Platform 1 has a lightbox indicator - it does indicate Aylesbury, but not Aylesbury Vale Parkway. Platform 2 never had a lightbox indicator. Fast Metropolitan trains regularly use Platform 1, but Platform 2 is only used by the Met in times of disruption or for specials.
