Apologies if this has been asked before, but can a service with three or more non-corridor units coupled work with pax in all areas if there is only a driver and guard aboard?

Please see picture (not mine) as an example.

Does 3x321 still happen on Greater Anglia one return service per day between London and Norwich? If so, then yes...

455-455-456 or 455-456-456 is very common on SWR suburban workings.

I have been on a summer Saturday FGW Weymouth service in previous years formed of a 153, 150/1 and another 150, the 150/1 in the middle effectively splitting the train into 3 sections. The guard had to swap between units for the short platform halts.

Not in current day operations, but when First Generation DMUs were in traffic, I've had three 2 car DMUs on the Blackpool North to Carlisle DalesRail, no idea how a ticket check took place.

47 years ago was on Cambrian service with 2 DMU's with 2 guards, making 2 stops at stations with short platforms.

465/465/466 ten cars with a guard run to Tunbridge Wells all the time (DOO area is only London to Sevenoaks).

Last Victoria Liverpool was often a 6 car 142 if an event was on at the arena.

GA also run 12 car 321’s and 360’s with only a driver and guard on board Colchester to Clacton and 321’s on boat trains to/from Harwich International (one of which has a guard all the way to London in the morning).

I seem to remember from previous mentions that a very small number of Scotrail 170 operations have, at times, fallen into this category.

...no idea how a ticket check took place.

That's the least of the guard's worries when they've got an awkward formation!

Triple 171s on some peak time London - Uckfield services spring to mind

All day now. Nominally to avoid quite so much splitting/attaching in London during the day.

When the Paddington suburban service was in the hands of the Pressed Steel dmus, a train made up of three 3 coach units was not uncommon. And that was in the days before the sets were fitted with inter-coach gangways.

Is there still triple 456 formations on some Hampton Court services on Sundays?

I believe the guard only joins the train at Sevenoaks when Networkers work beyond (towards Tonbridge/Tunbridge)?

I've noticed the same on the only 12-car 321 on the Southminster evening peak service. The Guard (?) occupies the trailing cab on the middle unit but the trailing unit is
empty / locked out of use on the branch.

More often than not they are on the train for the whole trip.

SWR 455s gangway connection is always in use, it's just not for public use.

I haven't seen the gangways physically connected lately. Or I could just have not looked hard enough.

Admittedly it's been a very long time since I travelled on one and even longer since I walked through one, but it's not unreasonable to think that they are being used for their intended purpose. I guess if every platform is long enough there's no danger of being stranded but still.

3 x 143 have worked the afternoon school train Exeter to Paignton and back, before. There was sometimes a ticket examiner on board too though.

As others have mentioned, GWR regularly work(ed) various 5 car combinations for events or summer strengthening. I’ve been on a morning service that was formed of 1 x 153, 1 x 150/1 and a 158 on the back.

I was on a Chiltern service in July which was formed of a 4car and 2 2car 168s (though the 2nd 2car was dropped before departure). The guard spent most of their time in the back cab watching the World Cup!

ScotRail have never yet operated a 9 car 170 in passenger service from 1999 to date. Even 9 car empties have been exceedingly rare.
