Under starter's orders

I've heard two IRA bombs go off, one of which was quite near to my office, but didn't hear another that was even closer to my office on the same morning. The sound was not of a loud bang even from not too far away but a 'thud' the like of which I'd never heard before: nobody else in the office heard it, and initially everyone thought I was imagining it, until the air was filled with bells and sirens. Fortunately, despite being at Euston Station, casualty numbers were surprisingly small, despite the area not being fully evacuated.

In my work building, a block east of Kings Cross mainline, I can hear the Victoria Line coming and going (sufficiently clearly to distinguish the northbound from the southbound) when in the basement; and on a quiet night even from upstairs too.

I recall hearing the Underground when I was working in the basement there (many years back). I wasn't sure what line it was; I guessed it might be the Piccadilly, now I know.

If you stand in the chilled section of the Sainsburys on Tooting High Street, you can hear the Northern Line passing below every few minutes as they arrive/leave Tooting Broadway station.

On a rare quiet afternoon in The Salisbury, N4, one can faintly hear the Piccadilly Line rumbling underneath.

I live 300 metres away from Balham High Road and I can hear the northern line faintly rumbling in the distance when I’m lying in bed in silence

The BHS shop which used to be on Lord St in Liverpool had a restaurant (SWMBO says it was out the back on the ground floor, so maybe actually on Harrington St) which used to rumble when trains went under it. I'm guessing it would have been one of the Northern Line tunnels.

Yes it was out the back on Harrington Street. You could also hear, and feel it in the main shop, particularly if you went round the corner to the tills at the rear.

In a basement flat in West Brompton, 200m horizontally from the sub-surface Wimbledon branch, the rumble of tube trains was distinctly audible at quiet times (and its lack on Xmas Day similiarly). Rationalised at the time as London Clay carrying sound well due to its density but I can't recall ever hearing a West London Line train (although there were fewer of them back then).... But perhaps it was the Piccadilly line, about 400m away but deeper?

I went to a cat cafe in the West End not too long ago that sat on top of the Victoria Line, which was very audible in the toilets downstairs. A much more different sound to the rumble of an older tube line, like the Northern Line, the noise is much more frantic.

I once had the misfortune of going to a massage parlour on a main road. The massage room was downstairs, right above the rumble rumble of the Northern Line every few minuites. Not a very relaxing time at all!
