My god that is an expensive day out, but given the journey length I'm not surprised!

Wetherspoons spotting... Now there's a hobby I could get into :p

There's quite a few folk who go about bagging Spoons. For me, a Spoons does not count unless I purchase a drink (or have one purchased for me).

Does it have to be alcoholic? So long as I've been in there all is good, Gateshead one I did needs re-visiting as I didn't have time to purchase owt. At least I know where it is!

Kirstofferson, it's certainly a popular pastime scoring Spoons. Get yourself a Directory (unless noddy1878 can be persuaded to send you his spreadsheet of them! Need OpenOffice for it mind) and crack on. Good excuse to visit Hereford for its Spoons! ;)

Scored another Spoons today (William Rufus, Carlisle).

Only scored for a beer, though. The Spoons-Crappage count remains at four - Rochdale, Manchester (Moon, appropriately! ) Matlock and Haverfordwest. .. :)

Ah yes the one just around the corner from the station, well placed for a quick break from cranking.

At my last count months ago I was on 43 Spoons but after recent efforts I think I'm just over 50 now. Really need to make an effort to count them up later, bonus points in that one of them has closed!

I have to have bought a drink. It doesn't have to be alcoholic because some I've only been too when driving where me and my wife take it in turns to drive. When ever I've been on the rails I go for an ale, preferably one I've not had.

Good call on beer ticking when possible too, you do find some amazing ones by chance sometimes.

I'm hoping to add to my Spoons count on Sunday and Monday, preferably finding two in Blackpool. Alternatively jump on a train to Lytham for extra ching and score that Spoons.

I must get a list and have a count up of the ones I've done.
I did the Willam Rufus last month, and the other one a few doors down but can't remember it's name. They're hand for breakfast when staying in hotels that want to charge stupid prices.

Another one that's handy for a quick pint when cranking is the john blacker opposite Lime Stree station

I'd not say that was 'opposite Lime Street' not far away yes but it's awkward to find if you don't know where it is. I just happened to find it on a walk from Central to Lime Street.

2nd September - London Bash

Unlike my last bash this one had been on the cards for ages and I was back to reasonable ching for it! My mate met me at Plymouth for our usual 1A40 trip up to London. I know it was the summer holidays still but it was really busy! So busy in fact there was literally no room in the two seated coaches. We headed to the buffet coach and checked if it was alright if we could sit in there. We could so all was well!

57303 was doing the honours (so I have now had 770 miles off her!) and we went via Melksham. Into Paddington on time we set off more or less straight away to the Hammersmith lines for dud 21333 and 21334. We were both after different units which meant we would split and not see each other again until lunchtime! We parted ways at Kings Cross and I headed down onto the Northern line for the the tube to London Bridge. I got down there and saw a train was due in ten minutes. Thats fine. Eleven minutes to London Birdge and I would be there for the first train I wanted. At this point I should add that I had a little bit of gen of some of the first diagrams of some of my required units. This still meant some careful planning and working out what would drop onto what but it was a start. Anyway ten minutes came and went and there was no sign of the train. Hmmmm! The next one was due in four minutes now. It was due for four minutes for the next nine minutes! What was going on! Eventually (after a 27 minute wait and quite a full platform by now) a train finally turned up (51716 and 51602, both dud) and it was off to London Bridge I went. During this time I did see L52 on the other platform and I managed to get a reasonable photo on my phone considering it was moving.

Once at London Bridge I went up to the Terminating platforms. I had obviously missed my first train so I went of the next one. All still good! 455810 with winner 455829! I took this to Tulse Hill and returned to Peckham Rye on 455807 and 812. From here I moved to the other platforms for the next Thameslink service. A nice double set of 319384 and 385 (both required) was taken to new shack Nunhead. I wasn’t here long. 319454 and 457 took me all the way to Elephant and Castle. If my gen was right (and my calculations) 319003 would be on the next train. It was (with 319012) and this was taken back to Peckham Rye. So far so good.

Up next I needed to be over at East Croydon. The next train that came in was a bonus for me. It was the one I had originally tried to catch before being held up on the Northern Line! I had no idea what it’s next moves were as I hadn’t looked so this was a nice surprise. I took 455808 and 837 for the short hop to East Dulwich for a shack scratch and then another bonus in the form of 822 and 814 to West Croydon. Well that was two 455s down which I thought I’d lost or hadn’t yet worked out where they’d be!

I needed to be at the East Station so it was on to the tram. I needed Wellesley Road as a scratch and made the most of the fact 2548 was literally seconds in front of 2554 (and was also needed). Once at East Croydon I went down and waited for a train from Caterham/Tattenham Corner (can’t remember which one it was!). My gen was a gain correct and it was 455806 which I took to Norwood Junction. Another short wait and 455839 was had to Penge West (shack scratch). I then headed back towards East Croydon. I jumped onto 378217 for the almost pointless leap to Annerley. I thought it was a new station but when I got home and checked my notes it appears I have been there before! Never mind.

Double 455s 843 and 838 were had back to East Croydon. By now I had three units of which I still had gen for left to find. Two them I had long lost (couldn’t work out what they did) and the third to be honest I wasn’t very hopeful for as it had nearly been six hours since the first diagram that it did! For the final unit I needed to be in the Thameslink Core but I still had a bit of time left. So now it was jump on what I need for a while!

With that in mind and being at East Croydon, I was hoping I wouldn’t be waiting very long, and I wasn’t! Mega winning train formed of 377314, 313, 327 and 304 took me to Victoria! It was then a jump back to Clapham on 377317 and 328 for 377151, 307 and 303 back to Victoria! That was six 377/3s scored in no time at all! Now was time to head to the Thameslink core where I would meet my mate for lunch and with any luck another 319! Dud D stock 7509 and 8098 from Victoria to Blackfriars. As I headed up to the main station I was nearly stopped by someone trying to sell something but avoided them and kept going. Good job. I just managed to make it onto triple winning 387102, 104 and 110 which I took to Farringdon. It wasn’t long before another two 387s were had to St P, this time 387105 and 117.

Now it was back to Blackfriars to meet my mate. I already knew he was on the train I wanted (he needed it too) so I knew I would get another 319! I took 319448 and 437 to Blackfriars before the jump back to Farringdon on 319217 and 421. With that morning (and a rather good one at that!) complete we headed to Sir John Oldcastle for lunch.

After lunch (food good but disappointing pint of Adnams Lighthouse) we stayed on the core for a bit. My mate still needed 319s but it was 377s and 387s I was after! After going with him on some trains we split again. I was scoring nothing! We’d had 377215 and 505 to St Pancras, 319431 and 426 back to Farringdon and 377210 and 207 to Blackfriars. A required 387 came in for me (387116 and 126) so I jumped on it to Farringdon. This turned out to be a good move as a triple set rolled in the other way made up of 387127, 109 and 128. I needed two of those. What happened next really annoyed me! I fell asleep! We were waiting ages to go and I shut my eyes before we even left Farringdon! I opened them again as we were leaving Blackfriars! Doh! Off on the what feels like a year long excursion to East Croydon then!

When I finally got there I headed back the way I came. I couldn’t stray to far as time was now running out and I needed to be back at Paddington for 1803 home! So dud 377518 and 515 to Farringdon. Why Farringdon. I could hover between Thameslink and Met then and get what was needed. As it turns out I ended up back at Blackfriars on 387120 and 103. 377514 and 516 back to Farringdon where I thought that would be it. I was just about to get on the next Met train to Paddington and I saw a winning 377508 had rolled in! I pegged it and made it just! One more trip to St Pancras and then back to Farringdon (I didn’t want to walk at St Pancras!)! 377502 and 520 were duds back to Farringdon and then I left for Paddington on dud 21375 and 376.

43133 and 43183 took me home and in the comfort of first class (I may have said it before but I really like the new refurbished GWR first class interior). Only problem was I had forgotten my phone charger so that was in danger of running out! I’d hammered my phone earlier in the day trying to work out what trains I needed but it all worked out! A good and enjoyable day! 27 winning units and 1 new tram. Three new stations and one new tram stop. 550 miles (excluding underground as I have yet to work that bit out)!

My next trip was due to a Freedom of the North West at the end of September but I have decided to do something I haven’t done since May 2013! A Freedom of the Severn and Solant! The aim is to see if I can find my last two FGW 150s (shouldn’t be too hard I imagine as they operate in and around Bristol) 158962 and 175109 (Cardiff hopefully). Once that is done it is stations in the area that I’ll be going after!

If you go to Bristol to look for your last FGW 150s they could actually be on the St.Ives Branch on the day !!!

In theory they could but very unlikely. St Ives branch either uses 1 or 2 units depending on the season so its 2 or 4 car. 2 is plenty in the winter, and three isn't enough in the summer.

I bet they were!

Jealous of the FoSS, I need to do one again for 444s, 450s and 158884, well and any 313/2s and 377s I can get too of course, not to mention a handful of 150/1s, the two 150/9s and 158960. Hmm, I'm getting ideas now, I may need to book a full week off from work...

As I mentioned in my last trip report, I had decided that a Freedom of the Severn & Solent (FOSS) was well overdue. I couldn’t believe I had not done one for that long (May 2013). I’m currently sat on 221140 waiting for it to leave Plymouth and I have bought my laptop with me so I can actually write my trip report as I go (well try!). In the past I have considered using my phone to do but I like to save my battery incase I don’t have a chance to charge it! First, a bit of backstory. I was a rail enthusiast as a kid but as I got older my interest declined (which I now regret). I got back into it back in 2010 (photography wise) and boy had the scene changed. Every single unit was literarily required. I bumped into someone I worked with (I had no idea) at Plymouth station whilst waiting for the unusual at the time Arriva 57s working the sleeper. From that moment on I got back into the hobby full time. Spotting and bashing. Initially most of my (our) trips were local using Ride Cornwall and Devon Day Ranger tickets (£8.30 and £6.60 with a Devon and Cornwall Railcard, and still the same price today!). As we started finishing off the more local stuff we ventured further and started getting Freedom of the South West or Severn & Solent Rovers. This obviously got us as far as Cardiff and Portsmouth.

Over the next few years I ventured to all parts of the country but most of my days off were used in the south west until I was down to only requiring the FGW Turbos and 180s (which only just skirt the area in Worcester and that is a long way to go for them). On the Arriva Trains Wales front I was down to one 175, one 153 and a handful of 158s. XC it is one 170. South West Trains was a handful of 444s and a lot of 450s. Pompey takes a long time to get too so London is now easier for them. As for XC 170. Its a two car unit and they tend to stay on the East side of the network. The 153 can be anywhere in Wales, the 158s easier in Birmingham and the 175…..well a reasonably high chance that could be here.

However I was going further afield (and less often due to cost) as it was more productive for me. As time has gone on I have often looked at the Rover to visit stations that are required and as it so happens FGW have temporarily created two 150/9s that i need (I had the original two) and another 158/9. With that and station still needed I have decided to return to some old stomping grounds and I’m quite excited. Reminds me of a few years ago when I was back in the game and what a glorious day for it! The weather is stunning this morning down here in Plymouth. A late summer? Once at the station I got my FOSS and although I will only be using 3 days of it, I am still happy with what that will cost me (about £30 day with the PLY - TVP return added) and I’ll get a fair few miles off that. It will also see me out on each of my days off for the next couple of weeks. Another thing (and no surprise to some of you) i’ll be trying to get to some Spoons that have since opened in area.

So 221140 (only my second Super Voyager this year) to Bristol where I will bail for a quick look round for anything needed. If not I will head to Newport/Cardiff for a few hours and see if 175109 is about! My next update that I will upload will be tonight...

After nothing much to report between Exeter and Bristol (I saw a Frieghtliner 66 in the distance turning on the WSR Triangle) we arrived on time and I had a wonder round. No sign of any unit I needed so I jumped on the next train (158957) to Bristol Parkway where I would meet a Swansea bound train for Newport. As we left I spotted 150925 on the approached to Dr Days Junction. A quick look at RTT told me it was currently on the Severn branch. At least I know what that should be doing for the next few hours then. At Barton Hill, I also spotted 70000 ‘Britannia’, which unbelievably I had yet to spot!

Into Bristol Parkway and onto an HST to Newport. 43098 and 056 were powering the train. I’d already caught a glimpse of the new IEP depot in the Filton Triangle on the way in and was hoping for a better one on the other side. No such luck. The banks surround it are just going to be in the way most if the time! Needless to say the whole area has totally changed since I last passed through here in the daylight!

Once at Newport I decided to eat my lunch. I’d made it before I left home to save money. I had a short wait before any possible train would be due that I may have needed. First up was a ATW 158 from Cheltenham. It was 158829 and a quick look revealed it was a dud! 828 or 830 would have been good! Next up (three minutes to be precise) was a ATW originating from Holyhead. A three coach train was on the display which was a good sign and as it rolled round the corner it was indeed a three coach 175. As it got nearer I was extremely pleased to see it was 175109, the one I wanted! Get in! That was easy!

At Alexandra Dock Junction I saw a DB Red 66 in the distance. Was it my final DB 66 for sight which I know is in the red livery! No! It was 66185! and a bit further in the yard was 66095. After arriving into Cardiff I looked for the next train back to Bristol as that was now the best place for me to be to look for my final FGW units and I already knew one was there! 158951 shortly rolled in and it was back to Bristol I went. It was possibly one of the shortest visits to Cardiff I've ever made! But I have decided I will head back here on one of my other days and get a Ranger for the Valleys and complete the now extended Ebbw Branch and go for stations.

On the way to Bristol we were delayed and we got later and later after we left Filton. The good news was that I saw 150926 waiting in platform 1 for a train to Avonmouth! So both 150/9s were currently on the branch! I made my way across to platform 1 and looked at the current where abouts of 925 was. As we left I could see that 150925 had been due back into Temple Meads as I left but it was currently being held up in the same area I had just been. It looked tight but I may just meet it at Stapleton Road. Sure enough as we came in so did it and a quick platform change got me onto the second of the required 150/9s within five minutes of each! Brilliant!

There had been no sign of 158962 today so I decided not to push my luck and wait to see if it turned up and went to see what shacks I could now scratch. The next train (150130 and 153361) that left was a Taunton bound train. I saw a move for Worle with a few minute wait. This was foiled though when we left Temple Meads on time only to be stopped outside the station for a XC train to pass us a few minutes later (which must have been delayed for the same reason I benefitted only 20 odd minutes ago!). So I bailed at Nailsea & Backwell for the twenty minute wait for what was 158763 back to Temple Meads. From here I jumped onto 159008 which I had seen outside the station for the Waterloo service. Obviously I wasn’t going to London and got off at Keynsham for my second new shack. Ten minutes later 158766 came in and I took this to Oldfield Park for another new one. The wait here was too long so I walked (for about 20 minutes) on into Bath. Good timing saw me have a 3 minute wait for an HST to Swindon. 43032 led 43 and I now had a 25 minute wait for the train to Melksham. With that in mind I popped out of the station and went to the pub directly opposite for a pint.

Next up was 153382 which I took to Melksham for my fourth winning station of the day. It was here I would also get a new winning spoons and is where I went for dinner. Being Curry Thursday it would have been rude not to have one. A Flaming Dragon ordered and a pint of Funky Monkey. I then started to plan my route home. It looked like I would have about an hour here.

The curry went down very well (as did the ales!) but was soon time to head back to the station. Once I got there it was SWT hire in 158881 that took me to Westbury. From here I looked at my next move. I had two choices. A trip to Frome and back before the train back to Plymouth or the next train to Exeter for the train behind it (but missed Westbury) a few minutes later. I went for the later option. Frome will have to wait. Being home an hour earlier sounded more appealing at this stage. If I’d been on late for work tomorrow it would have been different but I was on early.

A great first day of my FOSS. Three winning trains (including the clearing of my 175s) and four new stations. I haven’t worked out my mileage yet but I covered a vast chunk of the south west today. Needless to say I am looking forward to Tuesday when I will be out for day 2. Will be 158962 be out? Who knows but I will definitely be scoring more new shacks.

I don't think you will see 158962 as I believe it doesn't exist. There was a temporary formation due to another set having a seized cardan shaft (I think that's what it was) . In order to maintain 3 Car sets there was a bit of a shuffle around which included the 2 Car Sets so 962 was temporarily formed instead of 959 for a short period. They reverted back to normal formations some time ago now.

Nice work! Keynsham is one I believe I had an HST off many years ago, but been a few times and remember a Wessex 150 out when I did it the first time.

At least you can scratch 158962 from the requirements. I had it when Wessex Trains reformed a load of 158s about 10 years ago, which makes me feel ancient!

As always a great read, I'm looking forward to the next instalment!

I need loads! I've done 899 in total. No idea how many i need (and too many to count) within the rover area but I am tempted to do a Valleys Ranger (I need even more there!) as an add on one of my remaining days.

Not a bad total for someone who hasn't spent tons of time going after required shacks! 1,454 I think was my last count, need to get the spreadsheets off my sister's laptop when she comes down tomorrow or Monday, hopefully I remember this time!

The Cardiff Valleys will take quite a while to clear, plus you might be better off waiting for the half hourly services to start on Ebbw Vale Town. Can't remember when that is, but will probably be early 2016.

Tuesday will be the first time I have ever gone out specifically going after stations rather than looking for particular trains! Quite looking forward to it.

You've got the first stages of the shack scoring bug, soon enough you'll be as bad as Lord Kite of Grateley and myself

Hope you have a good day at it tomorrow, I'll be working but then to be fair, I'm off to Dublin on Friday!

Shack attacking is more fun than festering looking out for required units :)

Sounds like a couple busy days, good news on the 150/9s :)
