On holiday for a week, the Monday saw me and my wife head out to the Peak District where we planned to take a walk. Using Derbyshire Wayfarers (great ticket) meant we could do what we needed to do cheaply and leave the car behind. We headed into Derby and 222006 took us to Sheffield. We then caught 150135 to Edale where we set out for our walk!

Five hours later we were back at the station where we popped into the pub nearby for a drink. We ended up missing the train back to Sheffield (the missus thought we had more time than we did and was sorting out her hair!) but that was fine by me! We jumped on 150135 (again!) to Chinley where we didn’t have to wait long for a direct service with 158856 and 158806 back to Sheffield. So in the end the missed train didn’t really cost much time and got me an extra shack!

We had time to pop into the Sheffield Tap for another drink before 222005 whisked us back to Derby. We walked into town got some dinner before the bus (with the same ticket) back to the mother in laws.

So a non train day saw me get two new shacks. Can’t complain!

10th May
I was off work for the week, as you know, which was handy as there was a rail tour I had had my eye on. GBRF were unveiling their final 66 in a commemorative livery and naming at the NRM. In conjunction with UK Railtours a tour was running from Kings Cross to York via the East Coast and then back via the Joint Line. I needed the Joint Line so having had my bonus from work I thought I’d treat myself. Why treat myself? It was first class only so a lot more than I would normally pay for a tour!

Being in Derby for the week meant some advance tickets were purchased to get to and from London. I set out on winning 222016 on the 0501 from Derby and due to engineering meant that we went via Stenson Junction (which then required a reversal). We arrived on time and I had a wonder round. I had an hour and half but I didn’t want to stray too far as you never know what will happen and I had paid for this tour! At St Pancras I spotted two new Eurostars (374) before I headed to Kings Cross for a drink.

Eventually I went over to the platforms and waited for the stock to arrive for the tour. Eventually 66757 arrived with it.

At the other end was 87002 which would be my first 87 haulage since I was a kid (oh how I wish I hadn’t lost interest for twenty odd years!).

I found my seat and I was soon (before we even left!) offered orange juice and toast! At my table there was three of us (which gave some room for us to spread) and the table opposite had a couple of guys who worked for Freightliner. We were soon tucking into a Great British Breakfast. I couldn’t fault it at all! Plenty of locos were spotted on the way but it wasn’t until York I spotted a 66 that was required (66305).

We then went into the Museum and I headed over to the far corner of the Great Hall where 66779 (new for sight obviously) was sat. Now I know 66s aren’t the most popular loco but it could be argued they have saved Freight in the UK. Now I am not saying that they are my favourite locos but I don’t have the hate that a lot of people do to them. They are better than nothing at all surely? GBRF did a very good job with the ceremony. It didn’t drag on and they got to the point. And the loco? Well I had seen a picture of it the day before and it looks so much better in person. It was lined up opposite the 9F with the same name.

Moments after 66779 had been named.

After the ceremony I had plenty of time and went for a wonder round the museum. Here are some of the pictures I had taken.

Once I had exhausted the museum, I headed back to the station. I had about an hour to kill so I headed to the York Tap. A few beers later and was time to head back to the platforms where the train should be in. It was.

66737 was at the head of the train. Very pleased with that as it was one the few 66s I needed for sight! We were off on time and Champagne was soon being served. Throughout the course of the trip home we had another great meal and we of course went down the Joint Line which was new route for me.

We arrived into London 11 mins late which meant I missed my train back to Derby. Why did book it so tight? Well I didn’t! NR changed the timings of the tour which meant my comfortable buffer should the tour be late, was gone! The new timings meant I had about 7 minutes if I remember correctly which was blown out of the water!

I went and spoke to the EMT desk and they signed my ticket so I could use the next train (just under an hour). Yes I had to wait but I killed some time by getting a drink. It was soon time for the train and I was asleep for most of it. 43073 and 43054 did the honours, again via Stenson Junction. The time it adds to the journey was a pain but luckily my wife met me at the station at 0059!

A long day, but very enjoyable. So enjoyable I actually would consider another tour with the first class service. I couldn’t fault any part of the day and GBRF/UK Railtours did a great job. Three winning trains, a big chunk of new route and 662 miles travelled.

Jealous of the 87 haulage, as it's been at least 10 years since I last had one! Looks like it was an enjoyable experience even though the ching will have been major! I'm rather fussy with my food so I'd probably not enjoy it in the same manner you did.

Good fortune with EMT as well letting you on the next train!

Any reason for the "Happy Birthday" plate on the front of 66737?

It's a bugger when you book a tour and the timings change :( Sounded like a good run up the ECML behind a 87. One of my hopes is to try and do one of those dining services in December for my birthday

Well to be fair, even had they been fussy, I had evidence that I had booked with a nice buffer but NR changed the tour timings.

I believe it was the birthday of John Smith's wife (chairman of GBRF for those who don't know).

Like all seasoned bashers, the 87s are well and truly missed. But it's good to see that 87002 is still being put to good use although it would be much better if it were in Inter City colours.

Certainly.

I think you mean VT livery though! Best livery the 87s ever carried.

I can associate with them being missed Keith. It was actually up in the North East, on the last day of the Premier League, running a Spurs footex up to Newcastle.

I'm all for BR Blue myself.

Nice little run out that Noddy, I have to say 66779 looks very smart in that livery, I've yet to see 779 but I have had 92220 for haulage

Wow, nicely done on the 444s and 442s (glad you got them before they went)!

Some of those diesels at Swanage look beastly - a beer and a ride on one of those would do nicely :)

Despite the "Evening Shed" jokes, I personally think the GBRF 66 looks cracking :) I'm sure you enjoyed the first class railtour!

Looks like a very enjoyable day out.
I've just had a look and the last time I had an 87 was 87019 as far back as the 16th of April 2005.
It was a Sunday and WCML diversions were on, I had it from Rugby to Nuneaton with 57313 forward to Wolverhampton, then the same two in reverse.
I seem to remember driving all the way to Rugby specifically to have what might still turn out to be my last ever run on an 87.
Absolute beasts :)

So during a trip to Nottingham where the missus went shopping, I was allowed to sample the Nottingham Tram. Since I last did anything on it the two extensions have been completed so there was a lot more route I needed and stops. Well to be honest I hadn’t had many stops at all!

We drove over to Toton Lane (so easy from Derby. Straight at the end of the A52!) and jumped on to 211 and headed to the city centre. We headed to Nottingham Trent University where we went to the nearby spoons for a cup of tea. The weather was wet and muggy but luckily when we had finished the rain had stopped. I now had about an hour and half to do what I could. I looked at completing the Phoenix Park branch and the stops on the loop. Should be doable with a few walks thrown in for good measure. My moves were below

213 Nottingham Trent University – The Forest
236 The Forest – Noel Street
235 Beaconsfield Street – Wilkinson Street
223 Shipstone Street – David Lane
220 David Lane – Cinderhill
224 Phoenix Park – Highbury Vale
223 Highbury Vale – Basford
205 Basford – Hyson Green Market
225 Radford Road – Lace Market

I met my missus a few minutes late as the was serious congestion around the Radford Raod area and it took ages to get round the loop. We went and got lunch. I was then allowed another hour so I headed South along the branch that I had left. My moves are below.

235 Lace Market – Wilford Village
230 Meadows Embankment – Queens Walk
220 Queens Walk – Compton Acres
213 Compton Acres – Wilford Lane
224 Wilford Lane – Rivergreen
201 Rivergreen – Old Market Square
225 Old Market Square – Toton Lane

I didn’t get to the end of the branch but I had done a few shacks on it. As I was writing this report up I realised I hadn’t added my winning trams to my YTD total so that has now gone up, but I scored 10 new trams and 21 stops. A long way to go but I did what I could in the 2.5 hours I had.

15th May

The last day of the holiday saw me head to the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway. With Wirksworth station a 5 minute walk from my father in laws, it was very handy. The weekend saw a DMU gala and all EVR DMUs were in action. I had looked at going the day before but other plans meant I pushed it back to the Sunday. Despite the then shortened time I would have I could still get everything and some of it with good mileage.

So first up was 79900, 55006, 50170, 59303 and 50253 which I took to Duffield.

20160515-Duffield-79900 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

Work is progressing at the Duffield stations booking office but it was soon time to return on the same train back to Wirksworth. It was then a cross platform change onto 51505 & 51188 up the short stub to Ravenstor. With a minute up there we were soon back at Wirksworth and onto 79900 and 55006 once more towards Duffield.

20160515-Idridgehay-55006 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

However I bailed at Idridgehay for a new shack and then onto 53399 and 51073 back to Wirksworth.

So that was everything now cleared but I had enough time for another trip down and back both branches. First up to Ravenstor once more on 51505 & 51188 before 53399 and 51073 all the way to Duffield and back.

20160515-Duffield-50599 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

So five new DMUs and 1 new shack ended my holiday. It had been a great week starting at Swanage, a railtour in the middle, some trams and heritage DMUs!

Ooh Idridgehay is indeed open then, good news as I have it on my list of required shacks to get. Same for Shottle but I believe that's still not open yet?

I see you got the forum celebrity tram 236 in, you sure did well with the limited time you had. A good excuse to go back some time though, less to get now so potentially it could all be complete next time!

Certainly you had a good week off there, plenty of variety for sure. Even time to fit in some 'norm' activities as well so that's good going!

It was. Very fortunate the missus let me do as much as I did I reckon. I did try to push for an East Midland Ranger too but she wasn’t having any of it!

I have done locos on the EVR before mind. But with Swanage, the tour and what was to follow it didn’t matter much!

Yes it’s open and Shottle is too but you have an hour fester as the trains were only stopping in one direction as it was a passing place. I don’t know if when they run a quieter timetable they stop in both directions?

19th May

Today saw me head to Kidderminster for the Severn Valley Diesel Gala. When I originally decided to go whilst there was a little bit I needed. By the time I went there was even more! Happy days! I would miss one of the locos (the 66) as it wasn’t running on the Thursday, which was the only day I could do it.

A very early start (I forget how early but it was certainly before 6!) saw me drive up to Kidderminster. I got there in plenty of time, before the first train, but I wasn’t after that one. I had wonder round and grabbed a few photos.

20160519-Kidderminster-D8059, D8188 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

Some of the locos here were touring as they had been at Swanage. The 40 unfortunately hadn’t made it (not sure why but very glad I got it at Swanage!) but the 46, 31 and a pair of the blue 20s had. I went and got a cup of tea (with the biggest custard cream I had ever seen!) and then went and joined my first train.

D4100 and D3022 were operating on the shuttle to Bewdley and I needed D4100. It was soon time to be off with what would be many shuttle trips that day. Most of what I needed was working the shuttle and I couldn’t see anyway of going further than Bewdley without missing required locos!

As we passed the depot (and there were plenty of locos there, many of which wouldn’t even run) I saw 68025 for the first time. That would be running later. 66763 was also just in view but due to its naming the next day wasn’t due to run until then. Pity.

Once at Bewdley the Gronks uncoupled and ran round ready to take the shuttle back, which I took.

20160519-Bewdley-D4100, D3022 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

Back at Bewdley it was time for some (although short) Deltic action! D9002 was had to Bewdley where I would meet 33035 coming in the opposite direction back to Bewdley. I’d missed this one during its stay at the EVR a couple of years ago but it was now finally in the book.

20160519-Kidderminster-33035 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

I was finally able to get a picture of one of the NR 73/9s that were visiting. I’m not convinced. They look like half of it is missing and judging by their performance later so are half the insides!

20160519-Kidderminster-73952 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

Next up was some mainline loco action. DRS had been kind enough to also provide 37716.

20160519-Kidderminster-37716 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

This was duly taken to Bewdley before coming back on 46045 (D182) which I had had a couple of weeks before at Swanage. It was now time for some 73/9 action. Well to be honest there wasn’t much action. There was trouble with them and it was a struggle. 73952 led 33035 to Bewdley. From here it was the obvious move back to Kiddy, this time behind 5580 (another Swange one).

If I remember correctly everything was starting to run late and things were getting tight but they held the next train which was 68025 making its passenger debut. The train was a little busy, ok thats an understatement but at least I was on!

At Bewdley I got some lunch and then it was time for a few more miles off 37716 back to Kidderminster.

20160519-Bewldey-37716 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

The next question was will it? Won’t it? It was 73952 again but this time with classmate 73951! Well luckily it did make it and we were back at Bewdley. By this time I had met with Dave who had arrived for what he needed. He had managed to get a seat and a I managed to find him though another busy four coach train! Once at Bewdley 68025 was now in charge with the shuttle back to Kiddy.

20160519-Bewdley-68025 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

There was now only one loco left that was running that I needed, 50049! I also now had time to actually do one complete trip of the line! The rain had started to come down now as well (glorious sunshine at the start of the day!). Dave headed off behind a pair of 20s and I waited for 50049 to come back into the station.

20160519-Kidderminster-50049 by Steven Booth, on Flickr

I jumped on and it was off to Bridgnorth. All the time that had drifted on the timetable started to come back as we weren’t held in loops as there was less running now and by the time we got back to Kiddy behind the 20205 and 20142 we were bang on time!

Very enjoyable day indeed. Well done SVR and with a massive lineup (I did about half of what was there as I went for what I needed first!) will they top it next year? Seven new locos and 73 odd miles travelled. Not bad at all but I just had to drive home now! At least I had company until Exeter as I dropped Dave back home.

Sounds like a great time at the SVR! I personally would have gone to Bridgnorth more than once but I wouldn't have been going for the winners.

You sure did well there on the SVR! Jealous of the NB 37 and 68 especially!

Good news on Shottle being available too, another of the many, many required preserved shacks that I need. Probably won't happen for years mind!

Having booked the tickets for this trip about 11 weeks before, I got to Plymouth station for the 0553 to London. I like this service as its the later of the three that leave within in an hour of each other, but is the first to arrive into the capital. My plan today was a bit of everything starting with going for a required spoons at Walton on Thames.

43137 led 43183 away on time but we lost a little bit on the approach to Paddington. I had my travel card already so didn’t need to worry about that and I used my Oyster for the first part of my day so I could get going.

With the Bakerloo line station shut at Paddington at the moment its bit of a faff to get to Waterloo but I jumped on 21461+21462 to Edgware Road for 21364+21363 to Baker Street. It was then down to the Jubilee line for 96119 and 96120 to Waterloo.

It was then up to the ticket office for BZ6 to West Byfleet, as I planned to clear some shacks on the line between Woking and Zone 6 at the same time. I got my ticket and spotted an incredibly late leaving train straight ahead. I only just made it but I am glad I did! I had spotted the rear unit and walked through to the next. 450127 on the back and 450035 on the front. Both required, but it got better. I didn’t realise it was a 12 coach train and when I bailed at West Byfleet I saw 450010 on the front! All three were needed! Nice start to the day.

So to decrease the time it took me to clear the shacks on the line I looked at Google Maps to see how far the stations were apart, with Byfleet & New Haw being the next one along. The shortest one claimed 1.9 miles. I had about 30 mins. The next route was 2.4 miles but looked like there was a short cut and that would make it about 1.5 miles……….I stupidly went for that option! There was no short cut and I ended up walking (OK, slight running at the end) 2.4 miles! It was a beautiful day too and warm! I was boiling when I arrived at the station with a minute to spare only to discover the train was now 6 minutes late!!!!! At least I hadn’t missed it! I went to the cafe on the station to get some water which I was desperate for now!

5854 and 5737 arrived and it was a 2 minute trip to Weybridge. 450550, 450124 and 450092 were next to Walton on Thames and another walk. This time slightly more relaxed I headed into the town centre. It was nice round here and I would dread to think how much the houses were. Eventually I found the spoons and a large breakfast was the order of the day. With that devoured, I headed back to the station. 5849 and 5730 were had to Hersham.

It was now time for another walk. This time to Esher for 5724 and 5864 to Wimbledon. I was going to head onto the Tram from here to get my last two stops but I spotted 456016, 456001 and 5719 coming in the other way. I pegged it over to the other side and took them to Surbiton. 450545, 450568 and 450085 were then had back in the opposite direction, this time to Clapham. I would head to the trams via East Croydon, or would I?

A little looking at RTT gave me an idea. I stayed on 377322 and 377317 to Upper Warlingham. It was then the very short walk to Whyteleafe. I decided to finally knock the Caterham branch on the head (can’t believe it took me this long to finally do it!). 377435 and 377150 took me to the end of the line (I only needed the bit from Whyteleaf South to Caterham!). I popped out of the station for a pint which went down very nicely. Back to the station I saw 377447 arrive so I let the train that bought me in go and waited for this one to leave (I could have taken a little longer with my pint!)

Now I would try and hit some trams. 2556 was a winner from East Croydon to Sandilands. It was all duds from now but I needed two more stops to clear the network. 2559 was had from Sandilands to Beckenham Road for 2542 to Avenue Road and then 2553 to Beckenham Junction.

Now I headed east (I did say I did a bit of everything!) on 465182 and 465162 to Bickley. 319434 and 319370 out to St Mary Cray before 466041 and 465929 back to Bromley South. Winning pair 375701 and 375712 were had all the way back into the centre of London where I dropped below ground level. 11085+11086 were had to Green Park from Victoria. It was then time for some Piccadilly line action as I wanted to clear the northern part of the line for shacks. My moves are below.

203, 240 Green Park – Wood Green
119, 102 Wood Green – Oakwood
149, (missed the other!) Oakwood – Arnos Grove
144, 868 Arnos Grove – Bounds Green
142, 163 Bounds Green – King's Cross St Pancras

With that done it was now time to start heading back to Paddington. 21520 and 21519 were had to Edgware Road before the short hop to Paddington on 21517 and 21518. 43036 and 43145 took me home to Plymouth.

A very varied day but I enjoyed it! 21 winners, 17 new shacks and 576 miles travelled. I had a tiny bit of new route in south London and cleared the Tramlink stops. On a side note I also walked nearly 11 miles!

28/29th May 2016

So it was bank holiday weekend and I actually had the entire thing off for the first time this year! Yay! As part of my quest to clear the Spoons I suggested to my missus we went to see her brother who is based at Lampeter at the Uni (its in Wales near Aberystwyth, I had to look it too!). This meant on the way I could do two spoons that aren’t easy to get too by train (you’d need a bus!). I will get onto the trains in a minute!

My wife then suggested we went camping which was a great idea and we ended up in Borth! We arrived late morning and setup the tent before wondering into the village centre. We escaped the massive downpour just in time where we found sanctuary in a pub. We then decided we’d go to Aberystwyth, on the train (see it was coming!!).

The angry skies were heading in the other direction thankfully and it was off on 158823 to Aberystwyth. After few hours there we headed back to Borth on 158826.

The next day I had persuaded everyone that we should get a train up to Pwllheli. I needed the line (except the tiny bit between Criccieth and Porthmadog). We drove over to Machynlleth (after I discovered Dovey Junction which was closer wasn’t really accessible).

We boarded 158820 and headed off. The weather was amazing today and good job it was! What a stunning line!

I hadn’t realised the stations were so close together (and the sheer number of them) made the journey quite long but it didn’t feel it. We eventually arrived at Pwllheli where we got lunch in the spoons (you can see what I did there!). Time for a quick ice-cream raid at ASDA (30p for their version of a magnum is a bargain!) before 158820 back south.

It wasn’t all the way back but we bailed at Dyffryn Ardudwy.

We then headed off in land where we went up and up before (after getting lost and more or less throwing away the walk instructions) heading across and back down to the coast! This place really is where the Mountains meet the Coast! A pint and wonder on the beach before 158836 from Talybont back to the Machynlleth.

Well sort of. Originally I was going to bail at Dovey Junction and walk to main road where my wife and brother in law would pick me up. Having bailed I saw another train coming in. Bonus. I’ll just catch this one and save me the walk. I’d only be 5 minutes behind. Even better was it was winning 158829!

So I managed 6 new shacks over the weekend without any effort really and one winning unit taking my ATW requirements down to 2, one 153 and one 158!

Probably you were on a Birmingham International train that attaches two portions at Machynlleth. One comes from Pwllheli, the other from Aberystwyth, so it is a perfect way to score Dovey Junction as you would end up back on the same service towards Birmingham.

I think that was it although I thought the Aberystwyth service was first. I've not looked at it in detail as it was unplanned but no matter I scored the shack!

1st June 2016

My last advance booking (I had nothing planned after this trip due to unknowns that could effect future trips) was another London one! This time I was on the slightly later 0532 off Plymouth and into London at 0921. 43029 and 43091 were in charge. 37116 was at Exeter Riverside Yard. At Westbury was 66003, 60007 and 70801. A few UID 70s were hidden but as I’ve seen them all I wasn’t too bothered. A few more locos were spotted at Acton but nothing I needed.

So what was my plan today. With so much still too do I keep narrowing down my needs by first seeing what Spoons I need. Hertford (or Hereford as my phone and computer keep wanting to correct it too!). was needed and for the route between Hertford East and the main line at Broxbourne.

I went and got my BZ6 to Hertford ticket and then it was onto 21338 and 21337 to Edgware Road for 21436 and 21435 to Kings Cross St Pancras. I jumped onto the first service to Finsbury Park in hope that I needed it. I didn’t. I left 365516 and waited for the dud 313s that were due to arrive. 313028 and 313038 took me to Hertford North.

It was then the walk to the Hertford East via the spoons for breakfast to Hertford East. To save time and festering I hopped forwards to St Margarets on 317510 and 317658 before 317649 and 317660 back to Ware. The same pair then came back and I bailed at Rye House. From here I headed into the town for another spoons before I 317514 and 317665 to Tottenham Hale.

At this stage I was wondering whether the next part of my plan was a good idea (not that I could back out as I already had the ticket!) as I had yet to pick any winners up! 317671 was then had to Stratford.

Finally a winner! 321324 was taken to Hockley. 321446 back to Rayleigh where another short walk into the town bagged another spoons. 321351 onto Prittlewell before 321440 to Rochford. From here 321341 took me to Southend International Airport. Finally it was 321447 to Southend Victoria which saw me clear the Southend branch for shacks and the route! Still only one winner though and my chances were even slimmer with the next part of my plan.

Onto Southend Central (via the spoons of course!) and onto 357006 and 357046 to Westcliff as I started to head back to London, well so I thought. Coming the other way (and if I had more time to think I wouldn’t have done what I then did!) I jumped onto 357322 and 357326 back to Southend! One 357 left to clear the class!

357010, 357026 and 357007 were about to leave Southend and I took this to Benfleet. Behind this was 357326 and 357322 (thats why I needn’t have got it the other way!) which I took to Pitsea. Onto Basildon on 357020 and 357201. Another spoons dash and single unit 357316 now back into London. The other shacks will have to wait until I come back. I still need the route to Shoeburyness and the bits via Grays etc.

As we were heading back into London I was on the look out for my last 357. Most of what I saw was too quick and I missed most of passed me. Eventually were back into the Zone 6 area and as we passed East Ham depot I looked out to see what was there and there it was, 357206! It was at the edge of the depot, headlights on and driver on board! Where was it going? A quick look at RTT suggested an ECS move from the depot to Fenchurch Street a few minutes behind the train I was on.

I went to the end of line and headed over to what would be the platform the ECS move would arrive into. I was right! Not long after I arrived, into the station rolled 357206 with 357012. I got on and waited for it too leave! Eventually we left and I had cleared the 357s with no effort! It had made the lack of winners all day (although I had cleared a lot of stations) worthwhile!

Despite this, I looked at what I could do to boost my numbers. Easiest way was to head onto the DLR. So I got off at Limehouse and these were moves I made on the DLR.

01, 12, 99 Limehouse – Westferry
34, 53, 81 Westferry - Blackwall
72, 27, 52 Blackwell – Custom House
107, 148, 115 Custom House – Beckton
115, 148, 107 Beckton – Beckton Park
68, 82, 41 Beckton Park – Cyprus
47, 25, 84 Cyprus – Canning Town
103, 133, 149 Canning Town – East India
34, 53, 81 East India – Canning Town
101, 138 Canning Town – Stratford International
35, 02 Stratford International – Stratford

The branch to Becton was needed and the line up to Stratford International from Stratford. It was now time to head back to Paddington. 360107 and 360119 took me to Liverpool street before 21405 and 21406 to Edgware Road. I headed out of the station here and went and got takeaway Fish and Chips for dinner. As we left Paddington with 43028 and 43027 with me enjoying my dinner I kept an eye on North Pole. Yet again nothing. Whatever is there is always locked away inside. Nevermind.

So another good day, obviously helped with the clearance of the 357s! 13 winners with 23 new shacks and a total of 611 miles travelled. Like i said this was my last planned trip. I would have to see what I could do going forward but I have nothing in concrete until September.

5th June 2016
So another short trip was had on this Sunday. My wife wanted to get a Fitbit and the one she wanted wasn’t available in our local Currys (something to do with them moving it to another location). Exeter was the nearest one. So we planned a day around getting that and going for a walk on part of the South West Coast Path (SWCP), which we are slowly completing.

We took 221128 up to Newton Abbot from Plymouth. Why Newton Abbot? Well 150938 was kicking about in Exeter on the Saturday and I didn’t know if it was out today. It also meant the wait at Newton was shorter than the one at Exeter would have been. 143617 and 143621 arrived and we bounced (to be fair they don’t actually bounce that much along the Dawlish Sea Wall and do hit max speed before Exeter) our way to Exeter. A reversal here and we bailed at Digby & Sowton on the other side of Exeter. A short walk to Currys where we picked up the Fitbit before the same pair of 143s arrived to take us back into Exeter itself. We bailed at Central as it was lunchtime and we were both hungry.

We had decided we would head to Paignton and do some of the SWCP from there. Back to the station and my luck was in! 150938 rolled in! You beauty!

I have no idea how long this temporary formation would exist for but I had got it (even if it was a short hop). From St Davids we got onto the HST to Paignton with 43147 and 43189 in charge.

At this stage the weather turned for the better! After totally miserable morning the sun started to come out! But the time we were well into our walk and walking alongside the Dartmouth Railway the sun was out and I nabbed this picture! Shame I didn’t have my proper camera.

With the walk to Brixham complete, a meal and bottle of wine on St Austell Brewery (one of the prizes from an Ale Trail I have done with them) we got the bus to Newton Abbot. It was then 43183 and 43137 back to Plymouth. An enjoyable day made all the better by 150938 putting in an appearance.

16th June 2016

As I have already said, I have nothing planned until September with several unknown factors coming up. So day trips were the order of the day. With that in mind the cost of GWR travel on non advances meant I would return to doing something that I haven’t done for a long time, use SWT! It means a later start and obviously getting less time to do things but at least I could afford it especially now I had a Network Railcard again.

So as I was looking at my options from the Exeter St Davids I quickly realised SWT were doing a promotion, £16 return to anywhere on their network. So the railcard wasn’t needed but I know I will get my money back on that at some stage in the next year. A little more digging and I discovered that I could use this ticket from Axminster on the 0723! Just needed to drive to Axminster! Nice! So with that sorted I booked a return to Ewell West via Guildford.

So with not knowing what parking is like there I set off a little before 0600. With no traffic and no problems parking I got my ticket and went and got a cup of tea. Bang on time 159002 and 159020 arrived and I jumped on. At Yeovil a women got on and took up most of the table, good job I didn’t want to use any of it!

At Woking I spotted 73962, 73965, 70808 and 59002. Busy here then! I waited a short while and 444013 and 444002 arrived. Wasn’t what I thought would be on this service but I got on for the short hop to Worplesdon. I had an hours fester here and had planned to take a walk but it was raining and I had no coat (not that I would have gone in the rain anyway!). To save the fester I bought a single back to Woking on 444031 for 444042 to Guildford. This would see me hit my plan earlier. Well it would have if we weren’t late! Oh well.

At Guildford it was time for some linear bashing towards London. 5731 and 5740 were had to London Road before 5719 and 5914 behind to Clandon. A little longer wait here and 5903 led winning 456023 and 456005 to Horsley. I had time here to wonder off for some supplies.

Back at the station it was then onto 5854 and 5703 to the destination Ewell West. Now was time to start heading home! :D I had to wait here longer than I had planned. I saw from RTT that the train running a little late but when we arrived the PIS changed and said the train was cancelled. Why? Then 1 minute before the actual time that the train was due it sailed though the station. Great! That put the rest of the plan in out!

Eventually 456016, 456015 and 5716 arrived and took me to Epsom. A quick dash out the station and to the spoons. I didn’t make up any time here and needed the time I gave myself to do it. 5912 and 5855 on to Ashtead before 5856 and 5735 to Leatherhead. Now I needed to try and make up time. Where I had originally planned lunch here (good job I decided to get supplies from Horsley instead) meant I had a chance too. A short cut through the park to town centre and then the spoons and back meant I did get all the time I lost back and I was back on plan. 5712 and 5718 on to Bookham.

I ate my lunch here as it was a 41 minute fester. 5905 and 5723 eventually arrived and it was onto Effingham Junction for 5718 and 5712 to Oxshott. I went back to Cobham & Stoke d’Abernon on 5740 and 5731 for 5723 and 5905 to Claygate. Another supply raid here (I was killing time but ended in co op) before 5705 and 5711 took me to Surbiton. I then doubled back on myself to Hinchley Wood to clear the shacks on the line (and line itself as the spur is a long way from the other spur to Surbiton - if that makes sense!).

Back to Surbiton on 5911 and 5704 saw a short wait for 5913 and 5863 to Woking for the next part of the plan. 450568, 570 and 022 arrived and I jumped on for Winchfield. A 15 minute wait for 450114, 018 and 028 (I thought this was a winner but I hadn’t crossed it off my list from whenever I got it before! Doh!) to Hook. A longer wait here saw me pop into Tesco. I wasn’t going to buy anything, just kill time but they had a Krispy Kreme Donut stand! I was sold!

450080, 450089 and 450013 took me to Basingstoke where I waited for the 159s west! I was half tempted to stay on this all the way back to Axminster. I’d be home earlier and I was knackered. But I didn’t!

159103, 159105 and 159004 arrived and I bailed at Overton. I started to wonder away from the station but there didn’t seem to be much here so didn’t bother. 159014 and 159020 (again) then took me to Whitchurch. I did take a wonder here as there was more to see. I could have made it into the village centre but cut back on myself so was back at the station with ten minutes to wait for the train.

Finally the last train of the day for me was 159001 and 159107 back to Axminster. Only two winners today but 18 new shacks and it only cost me £19 plus the fuel to Axminster! Hell of a lot cheaper than I was expecting! This SWT promo is running all summer so no doubt I will be doing another few similar trips if I can. Very handy when (as I will) I get short notice as to what I can do. I travelled a total 307 miles which wasn’t bad either!

I am now up to date! The year so far has given me 392 winning trains/trams, 254 new shacks/stops and I’ve travelled 10934 miles!

Congrats on clearing the 357s! Well spotted at East Ham depot! That SWT day was an absolute bargain and sounds like a good time too! Shame you had to get 159s though... ;)

Wow you really did catch up quite a bit on trip reports there! All very good reads, and you've persuaded me to get to the Cambrian Coast to have a major clearout of shacks, that scenery is lush up there.

A bargain fare indeed on SWT at the moment, certainly don't blame you making the most of it! I'm sure Kite's going to do the same, wish I had such a bargain fare available!

I'm kinda in the same boat with short notice trip planning and booking at the moment, probably for different reasons though. Hopefully, whatever reasons you've got, everything works out sharpish for you. Hoping it will for me soon too, checking my emails 3 times a day currently...

Noddy, that was some catch up! An excellent read by any standards. Your capital capers certainly got a fair few shacks in the book and then to fall, almost literally into your last 357 is nothing short of pure jam with the jam being spread one inch thick!

The Cambrian Coast trip with Mrs Noddy sounds like the sort of thing that Mrs KJ and I are thinking about except that neither of us will sleep on the ground. It's not going to happen this year but next perhaps? And coming away with some winners and shacks can't be too bad.

Finally, the SWT £16 promo is definitely one to take advantage of. Good for shack bashing!

You've been quite busy Noddy, well done on clearing the 357s. That £16 deal is good for day-trips :)

The Spoons at Andover is a good 15 or so minute walk from the station ;)

Brilliant deal for day trips and will try and make the most of them over summer, thats for sure. I have done the Andover spoons. Called in a few months ago by car, so I still need the station.

I’ve not been on here much lately. Couple of reasons of which I won’t go into here. I have been popping in and out when time permits but haven’t posted much and certainly not added anything to my own reports. I’m not sure things will change much going forward so will quickly round up what I’ve been up to here.

22nd June 2016 - Meeting Tech!
Not much detail needs to be here anyway as Tech has posted his report of the day. An enjoyable day indeed and for me Cranbrook, Feniton and Lapford in the book. Was great to meet up with Tech after a couple of failed attempts.

29/30th June 2016 - London trip
I headed to London with a mate on the usual Night Riviera train from Plymouth. We spent the day over within the Zones where Greater Anglia operate. We spent the morning going after 321s and the afternoon 317s. 24 winning units were had along with Manor Park now in the book. That was got during a move to get the Spoons at Brentwood.

The moves to and from Liverpool Street from Paddington bagged me 4 pairs of S Class units too. We finally headed home on the sleeper too (57306 now with GWR) so we certainly maxed our time in the capitol but we were knackered by the end of it.

That was June and a good 2081 miles travelled!

6th July 2016 - Essex bonus
The first (and guess a bonus!) for July was whilst on holiday with my wife. We headed out to Essex for a few days camping before headed onto Silverstone for the British GP. We decided that we would get the train into Colchester from Great Bentley (nearest shack to where we were staying) as parking was free then and less hassle. The bonus of a new shack also gave me 321339 into Colchester before 321317 took us home later!

12th July 2016 - Shack Scratch
Making use of the SWT Summer Return ticket, today saw me do Axminster to Bentley (Hampshire) to clear some shacks. I did pretty well scoring 10 new shacks and also had the bonus of 8 new units as well, mostly 456s.

26th July 2016 - Making the most of it!
I had an opticians appointment in Taunton (I know that sounds mad as I live in Plymouth but it honestly did save me money) and decided to make the most of it whilst I was up that way. A drive to Bridgwater and then a return to Worle saw me finally get Bridgwater, Worle, Weston Milton, Weston-super-mare and Highbrdge & Burnham in the book.

There were a few other local trips in July but they literally to get from A to B. By the end of the July I had traveled (an extremely poor) 590 miles.

2nd/3rd August 2016 - London once more
After a poor July for miles, August has already seen me exceed that total. A trip to London with a mate saw us carry on with where we left off last time we were there, hunting down 321s and 317s.

By the time we had finished, I’d scored 18 winning units. I am down to one Greater Anglia 321 required and three 317s. I cleared London Overground for units once more (after they’d inherited 317s). Next time I can hopefully pick them up quickly and then get to the Cross for the ones operating out of there.

I also picked up 2 pairs of S Class units to and from Paddington. Lea Bridge and Northumberland Park were wining shacks. Another successful London trip and 605 miles travelled!

You've sure had a bit of a mix over the last couple of months! It was great to catch up with you again too, it had been forever since we did London!

Getting down to just 1 GA 321 to get for haulage is most impressive, and it reminds me that I need to have a serious clearout on that side of London with all the new stuff on the way!

Agreed there, especially as some of GA 321 diagrams means that some units have a quiet day in the sunshine only coming out in the peaks (bit like South Eastern)
