All but a handful of Exeter services were cancelled yesterday (Sunday) due to ‘multiple axle counter failures’. Services ran to/from Yeovil Junction but not beyond. The problems haven’t been fixed and no services have operated to/from Exeter so far today.

My daughter's new MP (Tiverton & Honiton) might try to make a name for himself in the House. Despite this and stock shortages on GWR, the West Country's railways still seem to be doing better than many of those in the north.

"No trains between Yeovil Junction and Exeter St Davids until at least the end of the day" according to National Rail Enquiries. Clearly not a quick fix.

Now not until Tuesday end of service. It covers the area of the Honiton interlocking, running from just west of Crewkerne Tunnel to just east of Pinhoe. Hence they can run to Crewkerne as they have been doing since this morning.

Do the engineers have to get hold of scarce parts and get them on site? Three days seem a long time to sort this.

There is a detailed thread on Twitter from NR about this. It is a fault they have not seen before. Are doing a system reset tonight and hope it works. Tomorrow a service Yeovil to Waterloo and shuttle Yeovil to Exeter. It the reset fails the trains will be talked past each signal, thus taking much longer.

No replacement transport either, people were being advised to pay for their own taxi today and claim back.

Surely there must be some way to operate a skeleton train service, even on a one-engine-in-steam basis with points clipped?

Yeovil Junction is an awful place to get a full size bus to.
If they decide to use RRBs best to run them from Sherborne direct to Crewkerne, missing out the Junction and perhaps stopping at Pen Mill instead with a minibus shuttle between the two

Perhaps it's also knocked out crossings that would need local control and issues with getting a location for user worked crossings

Might be this one...

Extract:
The fault with the signalling system between #YeovilJunction and Exeter St Davids is still ongoing. Services are unable to run between these stations and may be terminated / started back at Yeovil Junction or Crewkerne. Disruption is expected until the end of the day.

They regularly use Yeovil Junction as a rail replacement hub during engineering blockades

I think this is it:

⚠️ We'd like to say how sorry we are for the continued disruption to @SW_Help customers between Yeovil Junction/Crewkerne and Exeter due to a signalling problem which means we've been unable to signal trains in a 35-mile section of railway.

Signals and points failure - Network Rail
How problems with signals and points cause delays – and what we’re doing to prevent themHow we’re reducing signalling failures.
The railway is divided into sections where only 1 train can be. The system knows if a train's there thanks to two forms of tech, track circuits and axle counters. Axle counters spot changes in magnetic fields when a train wheel passes by to literally count the wheels on a train.

Despite lots of testing on the axle counter system since it failed on Sunday morning, including replacing multiple components and calling in experts from the manufacturers, we've been unable to find the cause of the fault. So we need to reset the system which can take a few hours
To do this we can't have trains running nearby which would impact the service we're currently able to run to Yeovil, so we're going to wait until later tonight to perform a full system reset, although our technical experts can't guarantee it will fix the issue.
Therefore, tomorrow we will continue running trains to and from Yeovil, and plan to run a reduced shuttle service between Yeovil and Exeter serving all stations. But journeys will take much longer as they will have to be talked past signals and run at reduced speeds.
If the system reset works as we hope, then we will be able to reintroduce a normal train service gradually throughout the day. However, we'd recommend you keep checking with @SW_Help for the latest travel advice just in case.
Once again, we're incredibly sorry for how long this is taking to fix. We'll do everything we can to understand the root cause of the failure as it's one we haven't experienced anywhere before, and it has happened on technology which is usually very reliable.
We hope this rather long and technical explanation gives customers some insight into the problem. We understand how frustrating it will be for customers and local communities to be without a train service, but rest assured we're doing everything we can to get things moving again.
To note: we’re sorry to say the Tweet about shuttle trains to Exeter has turned out to not be possible - although we and @SW_Help would have very much liked to, it can’t be done. That’s partly down to logistics and also the need to test the system without any trains. Apologies.
As an aside, I find Wessex route are usually very good with their explainers.
Surely there must be some way to operate a skeleton train service, even on a one-engine-in-steam basis with points clipped?
Trains would have hampered their testing further and then the reset procedure required no trains to be within the interlocking area.

I would be interested in a detailed explanation of the actual fault, if one appears ( the twitter feed had an explanation of what system stopped working ). Presumably it didn't affect the Exmouth line, so that gives one boundary.

Personally I'd rather battle down to Junction than going into Pen Mill! Done it once on emergency luckily there weren't many cars in the car park

Exmouth Junction and the Exmouth branch are controlled by Exmouth Junction box, beyond Pinhoe is controlled from Basingstoke, possibly different technology?

Yep spot on, it is different technology - Track Circuit Blocks are used around the exeter area as opposed to axle counters. (To be precise it is up until slightly before Whimple station under Exmouth Junction, where Basingstoke are then responsible for after that)

Thaks @Bradshaw. Unfortunately it didn't work out that way. 1L37 was taken out of service at Yeovil Jnc for lack of a driver, RTT says "This service was cancelled between Yeovil Junction and Exeter St Davids due to an issue with the train crew (TH)." Luckily(?) the traffic on the A303 was even worse than usual for a Friday so I was only 18 miles away.
