I couldn't see xc running that service, it would be a FGW local DMU. and im sure people could make a change at Newton Abbot unless the times between trains are bad. A service would probably run if there was sufficient demand

I have seen FGW do it, but ONLY in times of service disruption or when train faults occur.

As Dave R has stated it's a simple cross platform connection (most of the time) anyway & I'd doubt there's sufficient demand to warrant a through train.

For at least one timetable there was a Cross Country service that went to Plymouth via Paignton. I can't remember where it started or what time it ran.

Virgin XC used to run a service through to Plymouth via Torbay just before Voyagers appeared. It used to run i think from Newcastle & called at Newton Abbot approx 18.10 (where passengers for Totnes, Plymouth & Cornwall where told to change into the following 1820ish departure) & then the service called Torquay, Paignton, Newton Abbot & Plymouth. It was HST operated.

Wales & West then Wessex had some workings such as Par to Paignton mainly for balancing purposes. Whenever i use the Torbay branch there are often healthy connecting passengers for Plymouth & beyond, but as said it is an easy change & the bulk are going towards Exeter.

There used to be a Wessex service that did this route. But I think it was held at Newton Abbot for something like half an hour

I've travelled on an evening FGW service out of Torquay before that terminated at Newton Abbot. It was operated by a HST and then ran ECS through to Plymouth. There probably would have been a reasonable case for this to run through into Plymouth station as a fair number of people along with ourselves were travelling on to Plymouth.

Yep it was a stock positioning move as it would have gone to plymouth ECS so they thought they could get a bigger share of the ORCAT's

It ended when the daigram was changed so the train went to Paington then returned North straight away.

It goes to Laira as 5A65 21+58 Newton Abbot - Laira TMD

Considering there is a Voyager at 2203 there isn't a massive demand.
