No trains this morning for various reasons on 6 Valley lines (Maesteg, Treherbert, Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil, Rhymney and Ebbw Vale) ?

It's included in the valley lines rover ticket
... and even runs up a valley. It's not a 'core valley' line though, but then neither is Maesteg.

There will be thousands of disappointed teenagers who would have travelled to Barry Island on this sunny half-term day.

I understand that some of the Valley Lines were closed due to a signaller falling ill and leaving a Box unmanned.

A few of those lines would have been down to planned engineering works.

Yes. According to TfW Journeycheck this morning Tondu 'box, and hence the Maesteg branch, was closed due to no signaller being available.

The other branches are closed for planned engineering work in connection with the Metro project.

In fact the only trains running from Queen St are the city line and the Rhymney line was like a ghost town this weekend.

Tondu had to close early morning due to the signaller becoming ill.

Rhymney to Ystrad under T3 for the week, the TAM via Radyr as above.

Ebbw Vale again under T3 for the week, this block was meant to allow the new signalling to be commissioned and transferred to SWCC, although it’s been pushed back to December now.
