Urgent track repairs due to a structural fault on a viaduct mean no trains can run between Brighton and Lewes until further notice, National Rail has said.
Damage to the track was discovered during overnight engineering works, said train operator Southern.
The issue is affecting the service along the east coast between Brighton, Lewes, Seaford and Eastbourne, with no trains stopping at London Road (Brighton), Moulsecoomb and Falmer stations.
Southern said: "Structural damage to the London Road Viaduct was discovered during overnight engineering work taking place in the London Road Brighton area last night."
Rail replacement buses are running in both directions between Lewes and Brighton, calling at all stations in between.
Tickets are also being accepted on Southern or Thameslink services to or from Brighton, including via Haywards Heath, and Brighton & Hove buses on routes between Brighton, Lewes, Seaford, and Eastbourne.
Trains between Brighton and Eastbourne/Ore will be diverted between Brighton and Lewes via Haywards Heath, with delays of up to 30 minutes, National Rail said.
A spokesperson said: "Network Rail and structural engineers are attending to the viaduct to investigate and begin repairs.
"While this is ongoing, no trains can run on this route until further notice."
They added that disruption was expected until approximately 12:00 GMT.
