Apologies if this in the wrong place

Network Rail are carrying out engineering work between Kiveton Bridge and Shireoaks, closing all lines between the stations from Sunday 11 June until the end of service on Monday 19 June.

Trains between Sheffield and Retford / Lincoln Central will be amended to run between Sheffield and Kiveton Bridge. Buses have been organised to run between Woodhouse and Lincoln Central, to help you complete your journey.

A week seems a bit excessive. Does anybody know the actual cause?

A look at the Draft Register of Possessions in the Engineering Access Statement suggests a complete renewal of around 10 route miles of track, with inspections of about 20 route miles.

I would have thought that some sort of service could have been run between Worksop/Retford and Lincoln.

It also seems a bit poor that they have to shut the entire route east of Worksop for a possession that's a few miles west of Worksop, with the stupidly extended trip times by bus that will entail. The joys of the fragmented railway.

Wouldn't it make more sense to work the service in the opposite direction? Train from Lincoln to Worksop and bus from there to Sheffield?

Or is that just too much trouble?

Don't the trains in the Sheffield direction in the main continue to Meadowhall, Rotherham, Doncaster and Ardwick? They are therefore not just a short shuttle service? Can't see with so much notice why they can't get trains positioned to run services both side of the blockage width just a short bus replacement between the two?

Right - but if you take an introspective "Northern" view of their network, any such units would be completely isolated with no alternate Northern routes for the units to take (eg for servicing) and probably nowhere to park them or refuel them. If you take a holistic view then there isn't any theoretical problem with running two "short" services. Or even extending Robin Hood Line trains to Lincoln. But we have a fragmented Railway and such things are no longer "possible".

It's not as though the units are completely isolated at the other side of a landslide with no other route. Surely it's only a short distance to get them back via Doncaster from Gainsborough. Lincoln is a large important city but it's at the end of a long route from Sheffield out on a limb from the rest of Northern's area. There have been many suggestions in the past that it would be better operated by EMT and then perhaps during this disruption the Robin Hood Line and Nottingham to Lincoln line could have been used to move stock.

If you look at the timetable for Scunthorpe to Lincoln via Sheffield you will see that from 9-30 from till 16-30 all trains do all stops every hour between the two places and also in the return. So you would have to juggle sets and crews to provide a service on either side of the blockage. Also Doncaster to Lincoln is an East Midlands Trains route as far as Gainsborough so I guess Northern drivers won,t sign this section on the route.

Also means no Sheffield -Cleethorpes via Brigg line services on Saturday 17 June - understand this will be Rail Replacement Bus throughout.

Shame on a summer Saturday for this line.

You could run a Lincoln-Worksop shuttle, certainly, despite the operational complications.

With only 2 units for the job, and with a 50 minute journey time the turnrounds would be tight.

It would connect neatly with both fast and stopping buses at Worksop.

However, the total journey time would be just 2 minutes faster than the planned fast bus, at the expense of an extra change for passengers.

I don't think Northern have made a seriously wrong choice here.

One week is excessive , or unacceptable on Hong Kong Standard. But this is UK. I used to study in a School in Market Rasen and I remembered in 2015 June the line was blocked for around a week due to a Freight derailed. I originally want to take the train to Lincoln and change trains there to visit Sheffield for the Sunday. I didn't visit Sheffield that weekend and I go to Sheffield the next weekend then.

This one is already better, you are well advanced be warned about the works and find alternative works for transport around those area

Yes, I had a message from my parents earlier today saying they were going to use the £10 Northern Rail offer to have a day trip from Sheffield to Cleethorpes this coming saturday. They weren't best pleased when I told them their train trip would go no further than Woodhouse with a bus thereafter!

Here's the amended timetable for anyone who may be interested.

I can't see a bus replacement for the Saturday mid-day service to Cleethorpes?
