They're connected by the unidirectional Halton Curve, which sees a parly service on summer Saturdays from Chester to Runcorn (dep Chester 0753) running non-stop through Helsby and Frodsham.

I was thinking back to simsig Liverpool Street and actually looking at the relevent screen confirms that I was wrong I thought you could go from the Suburban Line via Bethnal Green right across to the Bow Jn. Electric, but you can only do that just after Bishopsgate tunnel I think.

Perhaps a bit tedious, given the numerous junctions in the area, but Bristol Parkway to Patchway.

I suppose you could count Bristol Parkway to St Andrews Road.

I suppose but that's on a freight line. Trains actually do go Patchway - Bristol Parkway but they don't stop at both.

No there aren't!

it seems they've been abolished so you are right there aren't, so I'd say it does count. Some people are saying that if there are junctions in between it shouldn't count but I'm not sure about that. On the other hand though, if it is to be allowed then you could say Water Orton to Kings Norton should count, and if that counts, why not Ashfield to Bishopbriggs...

I thought maybe some peak-time trains avoided Bellshill? But I'm not sure if they call at Uddingston. For example, the 08:13 Motherwell-Garscadden doesn't call at Bellshill, and calls both Motherwell and Uddingston. The low journey time suggests to me that it avoids Bellshill. Same goes for the 08:27, 17:07 in the other direction and possibly some other peak time trains.

I know one peak time to Lanark goes via Uddingston and avoids Bellshill (doesn't stop. It goes Rutherglen then Motherwell). I guessed the Garscadden train does the same thing in reverse.

btw, I thought the Garscadden train came from Carstairs?

for the reason that 165/166s are not cleared beyond Bedwyn, and pre-SDO no HSTs could stop at Bedwyn. HST SDO has fixed that, and there are now peak hour trains between the two.

Someone previously mentioned Carstairs - Lockerbie, which got me thinking about Kirknewton. There are several services a day that work between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central that stop at Carstairs. Apparently, the EMUs that work the Edinburgh - North Berwick are based IN GLASGOW (Shields Road?), which explains these services, all of them operated by Scotrail. A couple of these services stop at Carstairs AND Kirknewton, but as Lockerbie is NOT connected to the Scotrail network, you can add Kirknewton - Lockerbie. Also, this is the longest distance between adjacent stations on NR, which has been covered elsewhere, I think.

Yes there is, It departs from the wirral line platform, every 5 minutes or so. :roll:

The connecting line is for stock transfer only, there is no point running passenger services down that way when you already have a platform that serves both stations frequently.

Hmm, that's actually right. Eveyone says Carstairs-Lockerbie is the longest gap, but clearly Kirknewton is further away.

I must wonder if that counts, though, considering that there's a junction in-between.

Shieldmuir - Carluke. All trains calling at both stations stop at Wishaw in between, but trains that call at neither avoid Wishaw by taking the WCML. So it is possible to call at Shieldmuir, avoid Wishaw then call at Carluke, but it's not happened, ever, as far as I know.

I've never heard of it happening, but if there were works on the Wishaw deviation line, then I'd imagine that all services would simply bypass Wishaw and call at both stations as described above. However, I've never even heard of it happening.

I take it you mean Grindleford but wouldn't have thought this would count as there are no scheduled passenger services across the chord to the Midland Mainline southbound.

If you include freight only line trains you could also say no service between Chinley and Navigation Rd.

Are we not counting routes over which no scheduled passenger trains operate? If so, and that's the definition we are using, then it still does count as trains are scheduled daily for Leeds-York via Castleford in both directions late at night and early in the morning.

It would be a very, very long way round via BNS!

If we are counting freight-only lines then yes, it does count, and if we aren't, it doesn't.

Buckenham in Norfolk only has a couple of request services each day of the weekend, to cater for the birdwatchers...nothing whatsoever weekdays.

Stations either side are Brundall and Cantley.
