:?: Any more examples of locations on the national rail network where there's no direct train service between two "adjacent" stations on the same stretch of line.

A couple of examples for starters:-

Fairfield and Gorton (Greater Manchester).

Chathill and Berwick-upon-Tweed.

And possibly also...

Lockerbie and Carstairs.

Lichfield Trent Valley (though there's no southbound platform) and Burton-on-Trent, not close but... :p

There must be quite a few of these.

Tottenham Hale and Clapton - I think there's a down train late at night, not sure if there are any up services.

Perhaps a bit tedious, given the numerous junctions in the area, but Bristol Parkway to Patchway.

I would argue that's not on the same line. You are correct about the late 'Down' service calling at both, though. It's the 2342 Liv St-Hertford East.

A better example from the WA division is Angel Road and Ponders End, as these are not seperated by a junction. The first 'Up' Stratford calls at both, but that's the only train that does.

What about Bethnal Green to Stratford? I know you pass the station (although not the platforms) when travelling on Great Eastern services but don't know if there's a physical connection once you're past the station.

Newton (South Lanarkshire) and Uddingston.

Trains going to stations via Uddingston only pass behind Newton on the WCML, as Newton is on the Hamilton Circle. However, next to the siding in which Cathcart Circle trains occupy after terminating (opposite end of the station from the actual junction), there is a section of track connecting the line in the station to the WCML making it possible for trains to go from Newton Station to Uddingston and beyond, avoiding Hamilton.

Or Yarm and Eaglescliffe ;)
Yep that's what I meant! Typed without thinking!

I don't think Stockton to Eaglescliffe counts as there are direct services via Thornaby/Middlesbrough but, if it did count on the basis that the train doesn't take the direct line then you'd have to count Nairn to Beauly, Askam to Dalton, Ferryside to Whitland and probably much more!

There isn't, so it can't count. Bethnal Green station is on the Up & Down Suburban only.

Acton Bridge to Warrington Bank Quay?
That's a good one. I am pretty sure there aren't any direct services, I can't find any.

Bethnal Green used to have a platform face on the Down Main, but it hasn't been used for years. It's now fenced off so it's no longer possible.

The Chiltern to Aylesbury stops at Rickmansworth but not Moor Park on the Metropolitan Line. Also on the Metropolitan stations like Willesden Green and Nesaden where there are platforms but the stations are only served by the Jubilee Line.

Don't know if anyone's put Kings Norton to Water Orton as that used to be, along time ago, a through route. It was used for passengers when proofhouse junction was remodelled with trains calling at Longbridge and Tamworth for passengers to/from New St.

I think they can, but it would involve crossing over most of the lines so would be pretty inconvenient.

Newton-Uddingston... it's on the SPT rail map as an occasional service, but I've never known one to do so. It's possible, but again pretty inconvenient.

A few from near me... Coatbridge Central-Kirkwood, Coatbridge Central-Gartcosh, Cumbernauld-Larbert, Maryhill-Westerton (I think that may get 1tpd to connect to the sleeper, though).

Geordie back from exile.
Dinsdale to Teesside Airport. There is a SDR of £1.90 yet it is impossible to do [without going via another station]. What would be the correct procedure in this case? Just wondering that's all

It's physically impossible for a train to call at both Bethnal Green and Stratford - the crossings you are thinking of are between Bethnal Green and Liverpool Street. Once a down train is at a platform at Bethnal Green the only way it can go is towards Cambridge Heath and Hackney Downs, and v.v. for up trains.

I refer you to my previous post.

The current platforms are on the Up and Down Suburban lines which have already effectively diverged from the GE routes by the time you've reached the top of the hill. This means that you cannot go from Liv St to Stratford and make a stop at Bethnal Green in either direction.

As I mentioned above, there used to be a platform face on the Down Main which made it possible to stop at Bethnal Green on the way down from Liv St to Stratford, but it has been redundant and fenced off for many years.
