There don’t seem to be any trains from Waterloo to beyond Southampton tomorrow (2022-12-22), at least in the afternoon. Does anyone know why?

It looks as if maybe there are good connections to Weymouth services, e.g. a 1555 arrival from Waterloo and a 1600 departure to Weymouth. Are these likely to be held if there are delays?

I need to make a bus connection later on and it’s looking pretty tight….

Its SWR overtime ban timetable which has been in action since Monday and is carrying on till 2nd Jan 2023.

There are 2 trains an hour from Waterloo at xx30 & xx00 to Southampton and the same in reverse back to Waterloo.

There is a hourly shuttle between Southampton & Weymouth at xx00 & vice versa departing Weymouth at xx.03 calling at
all stations. I would like to say that connections should be maintained upto 10mins but you would be best speaking to the
guard on your train if its running late so he can contact his Control to let them know there are people on board who need
the connection held at Southampton.

Hope this is of help to you, good luck for tomorrow afternoon....

Yesterday I witnessed an appalling piece of customer service at Southampton.

The 1230 Waterloo - Southampton train, which had been running to time, was held at Eastleigh to allow the late running 0925 Manchester Piccadilly - Bournemouth to overtake. It consequently left Eastleigh 4 minutes late and arrived at Southampton at 1359 3/4, instead of the booked 1355. While passengers were still disembarking from the Waterloo train on platform 2, the 1400 Southampton - Weymouth pulled away from platform 1. I do not know whether anyone alighting from the Waterloo train managed to run across the footbridge to catch the Weymouth train, but I know a lot of angry and frustrated passengers did not. They had to wait a whole hour for the next train to Bournemouth and Weymouth.

I really do not understand why the Weymouth train was not held for 2-3 minutes to allow passengers to make the connection. A connection that had been announced by the guard on the Waterloo train. And a connection that would probably have been made if the Waterloo train had not been held to allow the late running Cross Country train to overtake.

In that case, if I miss my last bus I can use the delay repay to pay for a taxi.

But that would mean the railway putting passengers first and that will never do, the cost SWR will pay for the delay to their own train by holding it will probably be more than the delay repay to any passengers having to enjoy Southampton for an hour ;)

In an ideal world the London - Southampton train would use P3 with the Weymouth train using P2 so it's a simple cross platform change, even if it means putting Southern into P1 or P4 (I believe all 4 platforms at Southampton can be accessed in both directions)

We got in at 1559, 4 mins late, but luckily the incoming train for the 1600 departure was only just arriving, and left 5 late. So I guess everyone probably got on.

Both trains full and standing for parts of the journey.

Today's 1600 to Waterloo formed of 16 coaches...?

I don't think 450016 was in that train.

Here are the stock formations on 23/12 from Real Time Trains:

1B31 1400 London Waterloo to Southampton Central 450032,450084,450016
1B40 1600 Southampton Central to London Waterloo 450015,450016,450058,450063
1B47 1800 London Waterloo to Southampton Central 450058,450063,450015
1B56 2000 Southampton Central to London Waterloo 450015,450058,450063

I suspect there was a set swap between 1B31 and 1B40. Unscheduled stock movements between Northam CSD and Southampton Central do not appear in RTT, so I cannot confirm my suspicion.

Looking at 1B31/1B40 on 21/12

1B31 1400 London Waterloo to Southampton Central 444044,444025
1B40 1600 Southampton Central to London Waterloo 444025,444044

Looking at 1B31/1B40 on 22/12 - the day before

1B31 1400 London Waterloo to Southampton Central 444039,444040
1B40 1600 Southampton Central to London Waterloo 444040,444039

On both days, the set that worked 1B31 returned to London Waterloo on 1B40

Incidentally, the set that worked 1B40 on 23/12 stabled in platform 14 at London Waterloo overnight and started today on

2F13 0750 London Waterloo to Woking 450063,450015,450058
2F22 0848 Woking to London Waterloo 450058,450015,450063

So, another variation on the set formation, as reported on RTT.
I would not like to guess what order the units were actually formed in. RTT can only reflect the data it receives in its feed.

And a connection that would probably have been made if the Waterloo train had not been held to allow the late running Cross Country train to overtake.

Today (29/12) I was on Southampton station and witnessed South Western Railway again sticking two fingers up at its customers.

Train 1B25 1230 London Waterloo to Southampton Central, which had been running on time, was held in Southampton tunnel awaiting platform and arrived seven minutes late.

It was due to draw into platform 2, but that was still occupied by the stock of the 1330 Southampton - Waterloo, which had been cancelled before departure due to a problem with the traction equipment (MD). 1B25 waited for 1B32 1400 Southampton - Waterloo to depart from platform 3. I do not understand why 1B25 was not routed into platform 4 instead, which was not occupied until 1404 when 1J26 1137 London Bridge - Southampton Central arrived. At 1404, 1J26 could have been routed to platform 3.

Train 2W27 1400 Southampton - Weymouth was dispatched on time; passengers alighting from 1B25 for Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth were advised to cross to platform 1 for the next Weymouth train; they were not told was that the train would be at 1500.

According to the South Western Railway website, 1B25 connects with 2W27.

South Western Railway may argue that they could not hold 2W27, because that would delay the return train from Weymouth. That may be correct, although 12 minutes are allowed for turnround at Weymouth. But why did they plan to stop at every station between Southampton and Weymouth? Surely it would have been better to advise passengers that some of the smaller stations (Ashurst New Forest, Beaulieu Road, Upwey) would not be served during the emergency timetable, to allow a bit of contingency in case of late running.
