There has been major disruption to services between Bolton and Preston/Wigan due to overnight damage to the overhead line equipment owing to fallen trees.
www.networkrailmediacentre.co.uk
This is the 2nd major disruption in a week, following incident near Euxton Junction on 18 March, which again resulted in major disruption for the majority of the day.
)
The only services running between Manchester and Bolton have been Clitheroe/Blackburn to Rochdale.
All other services have been cancelled entirely (2tph Blackpool North), diverted via Atherton (1tph Southport to Oxford Rd), curtailed to Manchester Victoria (1tph Southport to Stalybridge) or diverted via Golborne/curtailed at Preston (1tph each of Cumbria/Scotland).
Northern's response & management of both incidents has been poor on both occasions, due to:
Inconsistent messages about rail replacement buses (the service message initially states RRBs will be not provided, yet later provides details of RRBs departing hourly)
Abandonment of service for Farnworth/Kearsley/Moses Gate in am peak, and later inconsistent application of special stop orders.
Use of 2 carriage trains on the Blackburn services, and not redeploying stock from cancelled Southport services, causing severe overcrowding on the only services running. Also rendering the above special stop orders pointless.
No self-contained Manchester Airport to Bolton shuttle. I presume there is a OLE switch north of the station which would allow this?
Passengers urged to check before travelling as strong winds cause disruption between Preston and Manchester
Passengers travelling between Preston and Manchester have been urged to check their journeys before travelling after a fallen tree damaged overhead electrical lines on the railway.
Strong winds brought several trees down overnight causing damage to lines in the Lostock area, which has disrupted passengers.
