A friend is trying to book onto the 10.04 Newport to Paddington service but Trainsplit is saying that seat reservations aren't available on this train, which is odd. Anyone know why? Rather oddly RTT states it's standard class only.

Is it by any chance being covered by class 387 units while the IETs are having their cracks fixed?

Thanks for your help! How do you tell it's a 387 from RTT? Says 80x.

There is no guarantee that a service will be booked to be operated by the same type of rolling stock as the timing load. Timing loads are purely used for timetabling purposes and any stock that can keep to these timings can be used.

There can be secondary indications, for example if you look at the platform that the train is scheduled to depart from and use this to trace the workings back to a depot at the start or end of the day (387s use different depots to 80x's). This particular train is also advertised as only having standard class. However, as always, things can change on the day.

If you read down the list of timings in the linked page from RTT you will see that at Bristol Parkway and Didcot there is a note that timings are for class 387 from those points.

interesting, thanks everyone! My friend is travelling with three kids so was worried about lack of reservations. I presume the capacity of the 387’s is roughly equivalent to an IET?

Crush-loaded a 387 will take more, which is why they often do extra as-required runs from Paddington to Cardiff on match days and then shuttle back and forth to Newport during the day too. Handy that the wires now run that far.
