No Railcard - my mistake

Hi, today myself and my friend travelled a short, one stop to the next journey. I bought both e-tickets off the Thameslink app, logged in. I have a 16-17 railcard, friend does not (18y), however both tickets were bought with the railcard. Friend was issued a penalty fare, which he has immediately paid off (so it was reduced to half the price). They asked for all of his details however in the moment we wrote down him being 17. They did not check this at the time. Will they further investigate this and find out about the age lie and then prosecute? Would it then go on his criminal record even though it’s paid off? Will I be investigated as the person who bought the tickets?

GTR don’t seem to routinely investigate when penalty fares are issued, unlike some other operators.

Would it then go on his criminal record even though it’s paid off?

If prosecuted and convicted then yes, but I think the chances of that are quite remote. Even when they do decide to go down the prosecution route, GTR are almost always open to an out of court settlement to resolve the matter without legal action.

Thank you for your reply. Although you said they don’t tend to investigate purchasing history when when fares are issued, they did take down all of my friend’s details (name, DOB, address) and then looked them up and found his parents. The guy also said we were being ‘difficult’. My details were not taken but after scanning the tickets he did ask who [my surname] is.

I would think unlikely to be anything further from this but if you or friend hear from them head back here for advice on how best to deal with it.

If you’ve not heard in 6 to 7 months then I think almost certainly nothing further would happen at all.

Just keep an eye on post, e mail and spam - just in case.
