DB have introduced a "Komfort Check-In" service on some trains where you can indicate that you have sat in your reserved seat by using the mobile app, meaning that train staff do not need to disturb you during the journey

This was introduced as a trial quite a while ago now, does seem to be overcomplicating things a little bit if I'm honest.

Yes, its by now at least 1 yr old. Mainly aimed at the very discerning 1st cl. pax, which would generally opt for at least C=biznez cl. in planes.
Having a VRR-monthly at the mo (Rhein Ruhr verbund) I have never been checked too on DB-local trains there, but always on Abellio.

I travelled from Hannover to Wurzburg last week, 1st class with ticket on my phone on the DB Navigator App. It was the first time I'd seen this option so gave it a go to see if it worked. On the Hannover-Fulda ICE I was still asked for my ticket but the guard then apologised when he realised I'd "checked in" on the App. The 2nd ICE from Fulda-Wurzburg it worked perfectly (shame the wi-fi didn't).
