6 car trains are the maximum length to Moorgate, that's why they use two 313s in multiple.

8 carriage trains only ever ran into Moorgate from Bedford (and even then only rarely)

Really? I seem to remember most of the rush hour trains as being 8-car, running to Moorgate until Snow Hill opened. Even the Luton/St Albans starters

Well, Bedford/Luton/St Albans, from the west (Barbican/Farringdon) then... but to the *upstairs* platforms, not the Northern City line ones downstairs approached from the north (Old Street)

8-car trains went into Moorgate regularly on the Thameslink side as late as 2005 for definate because the loaned 317s ran in pairs on weekdays (peak only) and they couldn't go to City back then, also, when peak time 319s ran in to Moorgate they tended to be paired. I presume this practice went on until the line closed (the last two Thameslink (FCC) services out of Moorgate were 8-car).

I think he meant that the Thameslink trains into Moorgate didn't run that often.

Didn't they also run on a Saturday and Sunday as well or is my mind playing tricks? (probably is lol) :):lol:

Not on Saturdays or Sundays, at least not in in the last 10-20 years before closure - except very occasionally when there was engineering work south of the river. In the run up to the closure of the branch, a good portion (75%+?) of services in the main peak ran as 8 cars. I recollect some 4 car services at the edge of the peak.

Hmmm...well, unlike the 12 car trains from Finsbury....Im pretty sure there used to regularly be 8 car trains in to Moorgate?

Having said that...its real "inconvenient" when for some reason FCC runs a four carriage train during peak times in to Moorgate too.

Most platforms on the Drayton Park-Moorgate line (aka the Northern City Line), can only hold 6 cars max. Class 313 units are 3 car trains, and are the only permitted traction on this line which FCC operates. Trains will therefore either be 3 or 6 cars; an 8 carriage train is simply not possible. As far as I'm aware this has always been the case ever since the line transfered to BR in 1976 (the class 313s were originally designed specifically for this line).

They run either 3 or 6 car trains. No 4 or 8 car trains?

And the other reason: the Moorgate tunnel is third rail! So you could possibly get a 4 car (317) down there... but you would have to roll it down there, and you wouldn't be able to get it back out ;)

The only trains (except for that one time a 378 went down there ;) ) are 313s, the most obvious thing to make them stand out as 313s are that the doorways inside the trains are all a horrible yellow colour :P ... also they have actual destination blinds on the front, IIRC they are the only trains on the GN side to not have digital screens showing you the destination...

You'd be able to get a 319 back ;)
