Hi all,

Apologies if this has been discussed before.

6 weeks ago I was caught with a used ticket at Reading station. The chap took my name and address and told me I’d receive a letter within 4-6 weeks with the next steps (court or fine, etc) but I’ve still not received anything.

Should I be chasing this up? My concern would be that I’ve somehow missed the letter (lost, incorrectly delivered) and that the case would definitely proceed to court and maybe incur a larger fine.

Please let me know your thoughts and experiences on this.

Welcome - guessing this was from GWR?

Did you check (if you had the chance) that they wrote your address down correctly? Did you give them some supporting ID with the address they could copy?

Chances are they have not written yet, but you are correct to want to get this sorted for the reason you say.

It may be that this leaflet from GWR ref Revenue Protection might have useful contact details in if you think it worth trying to contact them :

Thanks for your reply.

Yes, GWR. The chap read the address back to me and I verified that way but didn’t have anything for him the copy on me. He said it had come back as an existing address so I assume he had it correct.

Thanks for posting the info; seems like they will write again if they’ve not heard so that makes me feel a little better. I think I’ll wait a little longer as it’s only just been 6 weeks.

Anyone had any experience of how long they take to get in touch with these matters?

Many thanks again.

I think you are definitely right to keep an eye on this. But sounds like your address was checked back in a reasonable way.

Can't recall if other recent cases with GWR have been on here to give an idea on how prompt GWR are with these - this case was back in Jan but not that much help as poster did not head back to give any updates so no real clue on timescales.

You will have seen other cases where it gets mentioned that they could have up to 6 months to contact you - but obv you do not want to wait 6 months only to then find out that they tried to contact you after 2 months but sent the letter to the wrong address...

Maybe give them another week or two.

GWR have a bit of a backlog, I believe up to 8 weeks at the moment

This is all helpful, thanks both for your time. I’ll hang on for another couple of weeks and see where we are then.

It’s now been nearly 11 weeks and I’ve still heard nothing; do you think there is something that I should do at this juncture?

If you go to GWR.com/revenueprotection you should be able to find an email address. As far as I'm aware the backlog is sorted now.
