Do you realise how old that story is?? I assume the Killjoy in the picture never succeeded in this ridiculous scheme?

And bloody hell, the Blairs are having another baby and Linford Christie may be banned from sprinting! On the other hand, calls for human rights probe into Robert Mugabe. It was ever thus.

Haha! I have to say, the picture of the couple kissing with the caption "tomorrows fugitives?" really tickled me!

I can't think of many good reasons to ban kissing but surely easing traffic congestion can't be one of them!

As for no talking at train stations, there are times when I wish some people would zip it! At least kissing is normally quiet! Normally.

I'm sure they do it just to wind us up. They should introduce a machine, whereby as you walk in you leave your emotion and soul at the door. you then proceed to be picked up, turned upside down, so as all your money gets emptied into giant collecting trays. then you leave by a separate door.

I saw this story on TV and it is simply absurd, its a complete disregard of freedoms of expression. Surely this is a tongue-in-cheek (please excuse the pun) jibe by some rater bored 'officials.'

After watching the video on the BBC website (not linked to in this thread) it would appear that the 1998 BBC article refers to the proposal to ban it, but it perhaps might not have been implemented since this week? I'm not sure, perhaps someone from Warrington can confirm.

Meanwhile, in High Wycombe, it is positively encouraged

Romance welcome at High Wycombe station

AFTER a station in Chesire banned kissing, High Wycombe station staff are giving a clear message to customers - “Kissing welcome here.”

Warrington station this week outlawed kissing near the taxi ranks after couples bidding each other an emotional farewell started to hold up cabs.

In response, a banner today appeared at the entrance to High Wycombe station, letting customers know that shows of affection were still allowed.

Kirsteen Robertson from Chiltern Railways said: “Railway stations are romantic places; they are where fond farewells and emotional reunions take place, where relationships start with a glance and even, in the case of our Marylebone station last November, where one passenger will propose to another over the public address system.

“So our passengers are more than welcome to share a kiss in our stations.”

She said that Chiltern Railways will be holding a competition to find the most romantic station-themed photograph.

Couples who send in a picture of themselves at one of the company's stations will enter into the running to win free travel to and from London and a champagne afternoon at the Landmark Hotel.

Virgin’s cancelled kissers welcome aboard Chiltern’s love train

With the news that Virgin Trains have banned kissing in all but designated areas in their Warrington station, Chiltern Railways have responded with a bid to find their most romantic passengers.

Kirsteen Robertson from the Chiltern marketing department said:
“Railway stations are romantic places; they are where fond farewells and emotional reunions take place, where relationships start with a glance and even, in the case of our Marylebone station last November, where one passenger will propose to another over the public address system! So our passengers are more than welcome to share a kiss in our stations.”

She said:
“To show that we are dedicated to spreading a little love around our stations, we are asking our passengers to send us a photograph of them kissing at one of our stations. From Birmingham Moor Street to London Marylebone, we’ve got lots and lots of picturesque stations, perfect for that romantic moment.”

She added:
“The couple in the winning photograph will win free travel to and from London and a romantic champagne afternoon tea at London’s exclusive Landmark Hotel. So pucker up and get snapping!”

To enter, send your photographs to press@chilternrailways.co.uk The closing date is the 3rd of March and winners will be notified by email. The judges’ decision is final.

Interesting that the signs appear to only prohibit kissing between man and woman

I wish we could ban kissing. Got PPM to think about; no kissing, no embracing on the platforms would be most welcome.

Well done Chiltern. If the sign is serious its just another erosion of our freedom. I hope people carry in kissing at Warrington. Its ridiculous.

From the Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/4936342/Kissing-ban-lifted-at-railway-station.html

Warrington Bank Quay station had put up the no-kissing signs amid concerns passengers' passionate embraces were causing congestion.

It meant an end to passionate platform scenes like the one between Celia Johnson and Trevor Howard in the 1945 film Brief Encounter.

But rail bosses have now decided to commission new 'Kiss Me Quick' and 'Kiss Me Longer' signs to get their message across.

A spokesperson for Virgin Trains, who put up the original signs, said: "There was always a tongue in cheek message behind the signs - to avoid congestion.

"But perhaps some people took the message a little more seriously than others.

"We don't want to ban kissing, hopefully these new signs will make things clearer." The 'Kiss Me Quick' sign will replace the original 'No Kissing' sign in the station's drop-off area to avoid congestion.

Couples wanting a longer smooch will be guided by the 'Kiss Me Longer' sign in the station's long-stay car park.

The station is currently undergoing a £1m refurbishment and Virgin say it has become "increasingly busy" since the introduction of their Pendolino trains between London and Glasgow and Super Voyager trains between Birmingham and Scotland.

I've got two possible answers.

1) This is a publicity stunt, and we've all fallen for it.

2) Well, you know how sexually repressed Americans are.

So we ban the kissers from the stations cos it holds up the trains fair enough.
So in the interests of punctuality are you suggesting that anything that holds up the train should be banned?

Families with pushchairs? People with lots of luggage, Old people and
People in Wheel chairs?

Put the customer first isn't that the motto and ethos of modern society. Guess not if you're catching a train anymore

That's not what I am suggesting. But old people, people with luggage etc. can't help go slow. Whereas people don't need to kiss, so they could go faster.
