Hi All,
I`m trying to work out some prices for a friend who wants to go to Hartlepool ( to see the Tall Ships ) on the 9th August travelling from Wolverhampton. They want to arrive into Hartlepool around dinner time and leave close to tea-time, 5ish i think. Ive checked eastcoast trains and Virgin and found fares there but when i try to split the journey via Manchester to see if i can get cheaper tix i hit a problem. Both sites show fares from Wolves to Manchester however when i try to get fares from Manchester to Hartlepool.....both sites show train times but no fares?? Am i missing something??
Any help is most appreciated :)
Kind regards
Mark

How about this?

Monday 9th August.
OUT
Dep: Wolverhampton (WVH) 0728 (London Midland)
Arr: Birmingham NS (BHM) 0748
Dep: Birmingham NS 0803 (CrossCountry)
Arr: York (YRK) 1027
Dep: York 1046 (Grand Central)
Arr: Hartlepool (HPL) 1147

RTN
Dep: Hartlepool 1756 (Grand Central)
Arr: York 1905
Dep: York 1929 (CrossCountry)
Arr: Birmingham NS 2135
Dep Birmingham NS 2150 (Virgin)
Arr: Wolverhampton 2212

As you can see, journey time isn't much longer than via Manchester with just 2 changes. And as this is a day trip, you can make savings by splitting at BHM, DBY(Derby), SHF(Sheffield) and YRK. This also works out cheaper than the one split at Manchester. And chepaer than the currently available Advance Purchase options on either route.

WVH-BHM £6.20 Standard Day Return (SDR)
BHM-DBY £14.60 SDR
DBY-SHF £17.20 SDR
SHF-YRK £16.90 SDR
YRK-HPL £11.00 Off Peak Day Return (CDR)

TOTAL: £65.90

If going at off peak times (The 0903 from Birmingham would be fine) it can be further reduced:-

WVH-Burton upon Trent [BUT] £13.90 (Valid any time)
Derbyshire Wayfarer £8.50 (Valid from Burton to Sheffield after 9am)
Sbireoaks [SRO] -York [YRK] £14.50 (Valid after 0915)
York [YRK] -Hartlepool [HPL] route Not Darlo £11
Total = 47.90

Good call there yorkie. Gets the OPs friend to Hartlepool for 1245, so not too bad time wise!

I assume that BHM is Burton? Must be a new code ;)

If going via Manchester, you can split at York and somewhere between York and Manchester (depending on what time train you want to get).
Splitting at Huddersfield and York would be £34.70 + £15.30 + £11.00 = £61; this would leave Huddersfield after 09:30, and could arrive by 11:47

Splitting here isn't really any cheaper, but it means you can use off-peak fares in the morning.

I was going to suggest splitting at Birmingham (BHM) but then I discovered that a day return fare is available at an acceptable fare from Wolves to Burton (BUT), but when extending this the short distance to Derby the fare jumps up by around three times the price. However given that the 0903 calls at BUT it makes this a viable option to anyone not leaving early!

via Huddersfield is the best option for going early. 0749 from Wolves gets you to York at 1035 in time for the GC service, as tony_mac says above this gets you to Hartlepool for 1147.

I can't think of a better way (faffing about splitting at places like Micklefield is not feasible)

Thanks guys for all your replies, ive checked today and can now see the fares on the sites i mentioned. However there is no way i would have found the fares and times that have been mentioned in this thread. It did occur to try GC but i didnt think it would be viable lol...you all shot that thought down in flames lol. Ive passed the info onto my friend and will let them decide now on what suits them best but they have asked me to thank you all .... so Thank you from them and Thank you from Me :)

Cheers guys
