Is there any word on whether the last NIR Class 80 will be saved?

Latest rumblings suggest it could be 2015 before it is available, due to lack of sandite replacement vehicle as yet.

All credit to saving at least one of these beasts... :D

Meanwhile what about a Castle Class...or are we too late?

I was of the understanding that a '450' was to be converted to sandite to replace the '80'

Not happening now. All 450s cut except two kept as 'reserve'. 80 class power cars being outshopped in departmental yellow. These things are so unreliable that it makes sense to have a unit with 2 power cars rather than just one a la 450 class.

Best answer long term shurely to sandwich the sandite car between a 111 class loco and the never-used-in-service DBSO.
