NIR break of journey.

Travelling on Northern Irish Rail, NIR operated services, I have a couple of questions that their website doesn't have an answer to, that I can find.

Is there a one day rover type ticket that would cover Londonderry down to Belfast and its surrounds?

Failing that, is break of journey allowed on Single tickets?

Also, is break of journey allowed on Off Peak Day Return tickets (both portions)?

My intended journey is Londonderry>Coleraine>Ballymena>Carrickfergus>Belfast, for which an Off Peak Day Return, Londonderry-Carrickfergus seems about the cheapest and most convenient way of doing the trip.

Help from any source greatly appreciated.

Thanks but as I'm entering NI from Dublin via Enniskillen I can't get a card to start with, and I don't really need to use the NIR services more than one day.

NIR has a fairly simplistic ticket structure without many of the exciting loopholes and opportunities offered on the mainland.

A return is just that. There is no formal provision for a break of journey. That said there are no automatic barriers anywhere and the ticket staff are pretty friendly and co-operative. They just look at tickets, not clip or mark them in any way.
You could just ask about a break of journey where you want one and it'll almost certainly be fine.


If you'd like a bit more certainty get the iLink card, loaded with a 1 day all region ticket (£16:50), before you travel. It can be posted to you and then you just validate it at Londonderry station when you start.

I would suggest getting an iLink posted to you and then just validating it before starting your first journey. It worked very well when I did it!

Bangor-toad, when you say "1 day all region ticket" do you mean the fare that is listed as "Zone 4" on the online ordering system?

Yes Zone 4 allows for travel throughout NI. You might want to check the User Guide here as that shows the Zones and also details bus routes that can be used with the iLink.
