After doing some research on the web I recently purchased a new Nikon D5100 camera. I decide to purchase a spare battery EN-EL14 as you do and was amazed to find the ONLY battery that works is a genuine Nikon at around £40 each, had I have done more research I might not of bought the camera, still it was to late then. Back to the web to see if there was a cheaper solution and I found a video on Youtube link here http://youtu.be/KNlT2SQseak . I took a chance, purchased a grip which I would have done anyway and a couple of £6 batteries. When the bits arrived I fully charged the 2 batteries and tried as instructed in the video. Bingo, it works exactly as stated. Provided you have an original battery, one comes with the camera then it should work. To set up insert the original battery in the grip on the right hand side and one of the alternative batteries in the slot on the left hand side. Switch on and the camera will work. If you want to play about with the alternative batteries try taking both out and just plug in one of cheap batteries, either slot. You will get a message telling you the battery is not suitable or similar message. Go back to the beginning and insert the original battery in the right hand side and a cheap battery in the left hand side, switch on and confirm camera is working normally, now for the exciting part, remove the original and the camera will now work with the cheap battery, turn the camera on and off and it still works. Now fit the other cheap battery into the right hand side slot and switch on, again the camera works now with 2 cheap batteries. You can turn camera on and off and it still works. I keep the original with me at all times fully charged, that way if both the cheap batteries should discharge together I have the original back up. OK it cost me £27 for all the bits but its a great saving on £40 and I have 3 batteries. I hope it works for you. Hope this is in correct forum.
