Guys/girls I'm looking into the possibility of travelling home on leave using the sleeper from Plymouth to waterloo (due to reading being shut). now i've never used it before i usually go for the 0553 out of PLY to catch the 1120 GC, but i'm having to work late so i'm loking at the sleeper on the 29th March. Anybody had any previous with it i.e. will the 57's go U/S or are they not to bad. i don't want to miss the 0812 GC out of KGX. thanks in advance. feel free to move if in wrong thread.

incase anyone is wondering why i go via London it works out almost £60 cheaper breaking it up using sinlges. plus AXC don't stop at eaglescliffe.

Its being run by HSTs during the diversions into waterloo, no sleeping cars etc.

The East Coast booking engine is claiming that reservations are compulsory even for the seated accommodation. This isn't actually the case is it?

Havent got a clue zoe, i've just looked in another thread and it's confirmed a HST doing the sleeper run. i normally book my tickets well in advance using redspottedhankey as i find it easy to use (when it works) failing that i'll default to the Grand Central site. I'm off into plymouth on wed afternoon so i'll be asking some searching questions.

No, FGW sleeper is a turn up and go service, unlike the Scotrail sleeper, where generally you have to book in advance.

Yes, although it does sit for a while at Exeter St Davids. There's no point running as fast as possible from Penzance to London because nobody wants to arrive at 3 or 4 in the morning.

I thought you had to book in advance for the FGW sleeper or is that only for the seats?

If there are available berths you can pay on the day but if you want to guarantee one you're advised to book in advance. You're advised to make seat reservations as well for the seats because if you turn up on the day you might have to stand, but it is usually only the busiest days of the year when the sleeper is full and standing.

Incidentally, you can also turn up and go on the Caledonian Sleeper, but that, like the night riviera, is subject to berths being available.

If you go to First Great Western website It gives you a lot of Information about the HST`s going from/ to Waterloo, including the sleeper. If you want further Information buy RAIL magazine (edition 715), the previous edition.
