That working was completed by an IET vice the sleeper set.
The stock (PZ88) & 57605 will be getting hauled back to Reading TCD by 57305. Should be running as 5R50.

Loco issue at Par, Sleeper was then hauled by 43040/098 + Castle set (sent up from Long Rock) up to Plymouth where passengers were transferred over to an awaiting IET.

Is this still officially called The Night Riviera? According to an email I received from GWR last week they no longer run named trains.

Yes it is still known as the The Night Riviera. All the other named trains like the Cornish Riviera etc went a few years back. Possibly when the IET timetable came in.

Yes it’s an interesting point, what actually qualifies as a named train? Yes it has the branding visible on the train but so does the Caledonian Sleeper but are they officially named trains any more?

Since posting the above comment I decided to check out The Railway Magazine publication The Encyclopaedia of Titled Trains from 2012 which seems to be the last official review of named or titled trains in the UK. They point out there is a difference between named/titled trains, to quote “a train title is applied to a single pair of trains per day regardless of whether one set of stock is used or two. A brand name on the other hand tends to describe a service in which a number of trains run during the course of the day all bearing the same title”. They then go on to give examples such as The Gatwick Express, Eurostar, etc, although they say the Caledonian Sleeper is an exception to that rule, and provide a detailed explanation as to why that is.

When the above was published the Night Riviera qualified on that basis as being a named/titled train but also because it was listed and named in the timetables both GWR and the National timetable. Today the above definition seems to stand but it is no longer listed in the timetables and GWR emailed me recently saying they no longer have any named trains, so still a bit confusing!
