There used to be an easement permitting Exeter, Newton Abbott etc passengers to stay on to Plymouth and double back (easement 2 lots of zeroes 4?). I can't find it in the current easement list. Does it still exist?
There are four easements that mention Plymouth in the current (21/02/2020) easement list (including one that misspells St Germans), and three that mention Newton Abbot, none with mention to the sleeper, so it does appear to no longer exist.
Easement 020003 (which would have been next to 020004) is to do with doubling back to Aviemore and Carrbridge off the sleeper, so that does seem a logical place to have it, but 020004 doesn't exist.
Easement 20004 was in the routeing guide published on 20/12/2013. It read:
Passengers for Exeter, Newton Abbot and Totnes are permitted to alight from the sleeper at Plymouth and double back to their destination in the morning.
It wasn't in the next version I've seen (which was published on 16/4/2014). I don't know why.
20004 Passengers for Exeter, Newton Abbot and Totnes are permitted to alight from the sleeper at Plymouth and double back to their destination in the morning.
Until about 2006, a dedicated sleeper car was dropped off at Plymouth, and passengers could remain on board until 0800. The easement allowed passengers for the stations up to Exeter to complete their journeys at a much more civilised hour. I presume the easement was removed because the dedicated Plymouth sleeper portion was discontinued, so there is less benefit for passengers for Exeter and Newton Abbot to double-back.
It's not so clear-cut for Totnes: with the down sleeper not calling at the station, on most days the first down connection from Newton arrives into Totnes at 0706 after a tedious wait of 80 minutes at Newton, whereas the first up connection from Plymouth would arrive at 0551 with a 14-minute connection. Perhaps the numbers of passengers using the sleeper to travel from Paddington to Totnes is too small to make the easement worthwhile.
I suspect no one would question it if you showed a full price (not advance) sleeper ticket, but I also suspect few, if any, people actually do it. Or buy a separate ticket anyway as the cost really isn’t that much. Further west I know there’s an easement for Hayle and Par passengers
"Customers travelling from, to or via Truro to St Ives, Carbis Bay, Lelant and LelantSaltings may double back between St Erth and Penzance. This easement applies inboth directions"
