Would it make it better or worse if it proves to be the work of a deranged or evil individual acting totally alone? No group has claimed 'credit' for this, he appears to have acted entirely alone on the night and reports say he drank alcohol, took drugs and ate pork. If so, he's more akin to the Hungerford gunman, the Dunblane school massacre or the various people who've gone on the rampage on US campuses, except for the scale of it. A lorry driven without due care and attention can cause death and misery so one deliberately driven at high speed into a huge crowd would be bound to result in large casualty figures even without guns or grenades being added to the mix. What I'm saying is, it could happen anywhere anytime, it was just the unfortunate people in Nice who were on the receiving end this time.

ISIS have now claimed responsibility.

Well, any pedestrianised street (such as the recent event on Regent Street) may now require much better barriers to be installed.. but of course, you can't just stop it happening almost anywhere if we get more 'lone wolf' events.

At least that's relatively do-able for pedestrian areas - but there are plenty of busy streets with unrestricted vehicle access where it would be very easy to swerve something over the kerb. May also need vehicle traps on tram lines that go into pedestrian areas (there is at least one on Metrolink where it goes alongside a railway - basically a pit with a frangible cover that will break under the weight of a vehicle).

Any high profile event is going to need barriers and/or "stingers" that deflate any tyres passing over them, and probably armed police too.

No, they have claimed "credit" - quite different.

IS are opportunistic and will claim tenuous links with any nut job that does stuff like this

Read the wording of my posting # 25 on the thread that I made yesterday and see how the seeds of such ideas found fertile ground in the minds of certain individuals. ISIL has no need to be involved when their "foot soldiers" of Wahaabist belief will do all the works and carry out attacks in their name.

As opposed to the religion of systemic child abuse.

Which doesn't go around murdering civilians, children, setting off bombs, sending in suicide bombers whilst blaming the west - shall I go on?

Last time I checked we already had "control" of our borders.

You really think that we have control of our borders with the numbers of people entering illegally and being given leave to stay? Dream on.

Leaving aside the tabloid sensationalist nonsense for the moment, what exactly does that have to do with our membership of the EU? The answer is NOTHING!

You realise that in 2015 55% of the asylum applications received in the UK were actually rejected! But again, the relevance of this to our EU membership is nothing.

It may be an opportune time to remind contributors to this thread that the thread title reads.....Nice truck incident, Bastille Day

I cannot see any possible correlation between an incident that occurred in France and the matter of British EU membership, however hard I try...

I was actually supporting the stance that you had taken, hence the quoting of your posting.

Well just for the record I disagree with the stance he's taken but anyway this isn't the place.

As you rightly said this thread is about events in Nice.

The title of the thread is somewhat unfortunate give that if you were unaware of the unfortunate events in France it could convey a whole new meaning

Turns out the perpetrator may have had mental health issues. Terrorist organisations have been known to try and exploit the vulnerability of mentally ill people or people with learning difficulties before:

"A Muslim convert has been jailed for life and must serve a minimum of 18 years after launching a failed suicide bomb attack on a restaurant in Devon.......

Police believe the Plymouth man, who has learning difficulties, was encouraged by extremists in Pakistan."
