NI Cross-Border through-tickets

I've got a monthly return ticket between Carrickfergus and Cork (which makes it an NIRailways paper ticket), but having already been to Cork once last week, I would next time want to break in the journey, even only going as far as Newbridge (which is on the Dublin-Cork mainline), then going back to Heuston later without completing the journey to Cork. Can that be done? Get off on a station en route and go back so long as I don't branch away from the route it was bought for (like going on the Galway line after Portarlington)?

The discounted Irish Rail Internet-only fares are not valid for break of journey/starting/ending short. Standard tickets including the one you appear to have are valid.

Here is the IE conditions of travel which pretty much covers you although in practice I doubt you would have much difficulty with that journey.

Is there any reason why you don't just buy a return to Newbridge? I would expect it to be much cheaper than one to Cork.
