Nexus disused bus stops

Whilst out and about in the Sunderland area yesterday, I walked from the centre all the way down to Ryhope, following the new coastal path which by the way I wouldn't recommend on that section, not very well signposted at one bit meaning I got lost on some dodgy industrial estate, scruffy views for much of the walk and when the views improved a bit at Hendon Beach, I came across drug dealing on the cliffs, turned off quickly at that point up to a main road! Anyway, for 99% of the walk, all the bus stops had notices saying they were not in use, including on the approach to Ryhope on the main road, and around the docks area despite buses passing. The only stop that had a timetable was in the centre of Ryhope, that got me thinking, are these stops actually not in use or is this down to a lack of basic bus stop timetable updates?

There are a few disused bus stops on Commercial Road, which were served up until Stagecoach significantly altered the 18/19 Sunderland circulars around 2016. The last remaining incarnation of the 18 route finally met its coffin in May last year.

Aside from those, Nexus are usually pretty good at updating the timetables on their bus stops and I’ve not noticed any missing timetables. You used to be able to view the exact PDF of their bus stop displays by using the Live Travel Map on nexus.org.uk, but with the new travelnortheast website, the version you are able to download is different and more print-at-home friendly (although I much prefer the layout of the old PDFs that still gets put up on the bus stops).

I simply cannot square "out and about in the Sunderland area" with an apparent unawareness that certain parts of good King Charlie's coastal path are still a little bit rough around the edges.

Were you "out and about" as an out of town tourist, or are you a well to do local trying to make a point?

Well, when you see a picture on google maps of a pier on a seafront, have heard about this walk and the seafront in Sunderland but don't know where it is and can't see any signs pointing to the seafront in Sunderland, then ask someone and follow their verbal directions towards the coastal path by the docks which eventually does lead out to sea, and along the way see a sign for Old Sunderland thinking this may be an interesting place then yes I'm a visitor. Oh, and I'm old tech, I don't own a smartphone as can't stand them, a group of pensioners on the old 46 bus from York to Bridlington were stunned one day when I got annoyed at a smart phone I spent almost a year trying to get used to, it got thrown at the front window in rage so it's probably not a good idea I have one lol.
