On Friday i was pleasantly surprised to find out I could buy a ticket for Monday at one of Souther's stations TMs. Usually I queue up at the ticket office for ages! Has this option been around long?

Yes, after a certain time you can buy tickets for the following day on many TOCs' machines.

Southern TVMs are the most flexible in my experience.

On the other hand, Southeastern, its sister company, will not allow its vending machines to sell tickets for Saturday on Friday evening!

Is that because (being tickets for a Saturday) they're Off Peak tickets? I'm sure I've got Anytime tickets for the following day out of a Southeastern machine before.

Do Southeastern specifically disallow sale from TVMs of Off-Peak tickets the day before intended travel?

(Obviously I could buy them at the ticket office anytime of course)

Their machines will not sell any tickets whatsoever for the next day on Fridays or Saturdays.

I wasn't aware of that. On Saturdays I'm out of "commuter mode" and am a bit more relaxed about time. As such I usually have time to get tickets on the day, so have never tried at the weekend (except for ToD collections, which is something else completely).

Just another example of why johnnycache's Southern is streets ahead of the competition when doing the best for passengers. I wish they'd take over my local, Swanwick(SNW)
