Hi,
Normal adult off-peak day return fare is £36.90.
I don't have a Rail card, but I am over 60, so is the following permitted?
Senior Wayfarer £6.00, which will take me as far as Greenfield
Greenfield-York return £25.90 (even if my selected train doesn't actually stop at Greenfield)
Saving of £5

Not if the train doesn't stop at Greenfield, no.

Do you do very little travel then? Otherwise it would almost certainly be worth having a Railcard.

Going via Rochdale and Halifax may take a little longer, but is cheaper at £22.80 for Rochdale to York.

You could, theoretically, do the journey for as little as £18, splitting at Manchester, Leeds and York but having to use specific trains between Manc and York.

Northern advances at £3 each for MCV<>LDS (£6.00)
Northern advances at £3 each for LDS<>YRK (£6.00)

If you want a quicker journey, you will of course have to pay more. There isn't a way to save a substantial amount using flexible tickets unfortunately.
