Newton Le Willows - Middlesbrough - Newcastle - Newton Le Willows

Hi Everyone

I need to make the above journey .. leaving Newton Le Willows for Middlesbrough late Sunday Afternoon 25/11. on 26/11, I need to then travel to Newcastle around 11:00 and then return from Newcastle to Newton Le Willows around 1700.

Can anyone offer advice as to what the best ticket combination is?
I don't particularly want to be tied to advances on 26/11 as meeting may overrun or even finish early!

Are you after a cheap combination of tickets for your journey? If so you may want to try trainsplit. The following advice may be useful if you just want the one (relatively costly) ticket.

If I have understood your plans correctly:

A Newton-le-Willows to Seaham Off Peak Return is valid for Newton-le-Willows to Middlesbrough on day one where you break your journey, then from Middlesbrough to Seaham on day two*. Then the return portion is valid to continue from Seaham on the same train to Newcastle where you may break your journey, before continuing onwards to Newton-le-Willows anytime within a month from your outward date.

Ticket cost is a relatively expensive £82.60 and time restrictions can be found at nationalrail.co.uk/TB


*using the ticket in this manner is quite permitted, but there are probably revenue staff out there who would tell you your ticket has already expired, or accuse you of trying to re-use your ticket if you do this.

It is a work ticket so although I have to be cost conscious I need the flexibility rather than advances.

Certainly valid via Middlesbrough for a continuous journey. There is no consensus on here when an overnight stop at the 'interchange station' is involved - it depends how you read the Group Stations section of Routeing Guide.

A combination of tickets which would avoid any issues/discussions about that or using the outward part of a Seaham ticket on the Monday (day 2) is:

Sun: Newton-le-Willows to Middlesbrough Off Peak Return (Route 'Not Preston/Liverpool') - £63.50
Mon: Middlesbrough to Newcastle Anytime Day Return (Route 'Any Permitted') - £14.80
TOTAL = £78.30

Coming back use the Day Return from Newcastle to Darlington & then the Off Peak Return from Darlington to NLW.
