This Sunday's issue of the News of the World will be the last edition of the paper, News International chairman James Murdoch has said.

In the past few days, claims have been made that the paper authorised hacking into the mobile phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the families of 7/7 bombing victims.

Sky News said proceeds from the last edition would go to good causes.

Downing Street said it had no role or involvement in the decision.

In a statement made to staff, Mr Murdoch said the good things the News of the World does "have been sullied by behaviour that was wrong - indeed, if recent allegations are true, it was inhuman and has no place in our company".

"The News of the World is in the business of holding others to account. But it failed when it came to itself."

He went on: "In 2006, the police focused their investigations on two men. Both went to jail. But the News of the World and News International failed to get to the bottom of repeated wrongdoing that occurred without conscience or legitimate purpose.

"Wrongdoers turned a good newsroom bad and this was not fully understood or adequately pursued.

"As a result, the News of the World and News International wrongly maintained that these issues were confined to one reporter.

"We now have voluntarily given evidence to the police that I believe will prove that this was untrue and those who acted wrongly will have to face the consequences. This was not the only fault.

"The paper made statements to Parliament without being in the full possession of the facts. This was wrong."

All they will do is rename it The Sunday Sun or something and probably with most of the same staff and reporters. What a joke. I am glad they are shutting it down tbh. Not a chance I will be buying that paper or The Sun ever again. I know some people will say that the News of The World is different but I don't think it really is. It's a widely held belief that the NotW is just The Sun but on a Sunday. I hope that those responsible are held to account FULLY and that an appropriate sentence is handed down.

They are an utter disgrace which degrades the good name of all honest journalists.

Will you still buy The Times? That's published by News International as well.

I was hoping that a proper investigation would take place into this hacking business, not some ridiculous management stunt that changes nothing at the top and keeps everyone cushy, including Brooks.

And Ralph, the Times hasn't, yet, become embroiled in all of this. Whether he or me would read it in this instance is totally beside the point...

Murdoch pulled a publicity stunt with this, made thousands of hacks, admin, designers and columnists out of work just so Rebekah could keep hers. Shift the blame, streamline in the process and hope it goes away. He must be laughing.

Utterly disgraceful, I'm almost appalled but it is Murdoch/NI after all. Just don't let it escape you the hacking scandal is still ongoing, Brooks still needs to lose her job, the Tories need to dance and NI need to not be allowed the BSkyB takeover.

exactly. All the staff will just move over to a Sunday The Sun...

No - staff at the Sun have been told they're moving to a 7 day operation. NotW staff being let go.

TheSunonSunday.co.uk and .com were registered 2 days ago by the way it has transpired.

And Andy Coulson is reported to be arrested this afternoon.

Sources in the NotW newsroom reporting Brooks blamed the Guardian for 'trying to get us, and they got us'. Staff furious at her, Colin Myler furious at her and editors furious too, personally blaming Brooks for not taking the fall and trying to protect NI.

Also, kudos to the Guardian, for running this story since 2009 when they first published it. Also make Boris Johnson looks like a fool for saying it was "codswallop" ...

Won't be happy until the Times, Sunday Times and Sun go the same way. And of course the takeover of BSkyB is stopped for good.

Will we ever know if other papers did the same thing.?

It is those innocent workers that I feel for.

Have to honestly say good Riddance. Now apart from the ones mentioned get rid of the Daily Mail as well.

Also i feel sorry for the 200 odd staff who had nothing to do with this mega huge mess.

Also as well hope the BskyB take over is stopped but can't imagine that will happen.

168 years of history, snuffed out in an instant by a megalomaniac proprietor only interested in the bottom line. Shame on you Murdoch.

.... the Tories need to dance ...
Yes, just throw that in, just to prove you've got a grip on the story. Of course, in the interests of balance, one could point out that, at the time the main offences took place, Murdoch was backing New Labour. Or that the Conservatives got rid of Coulson - who is still "presumed innocent" - when teh story broke.

Won't be happy until the Times, Sunday Times and Sun go the same way. ....
Surely a tad OTT. There is no suggestion (admittedly "yet") that any of those papers used phone-tapping, and the two Times mastheads are not simply Murdoch mouthpieces. Besides, what news media would that leave us with? The frothingly insane Telegraph or Guardian, the mind-numbingly tedious Independent, the Mail, The Express? Perlease!

One which broke the 'MP's expenses' story and the other that doggedly continued to investigate the 'phone hacking' story.

Insane? I think not. Examples of how investigative journalism should be carried out? Most definitely.

If that's what we're left with then, I say more of the same.

Crikey. Nothing if not decisive.

However, many related newspapers which once had separate newsdesks, separate management, separate promotional teams, etc, have already moved to seven-day operation, with a reduction in the total number of staff - for example the Telegraph/Sunday Telegraph and the Guardian/Observer.

This is a very opportune time, then, for Murdoch to steamroller through such changes at the Sun/NoW and end up with the Sun on Sunday (not, as someone has already rightly pointed out, the Sunday Sun, as that already exists as a NE England regional).

Anyway, a review of duplication and synergies at News International, with similar potential changes at the Times/Sunday Times, were already being publicly considered, according to quotes from NI's chief executive in Media Guardian last month (June 22 I think - it's probably still on the website).

All the British public have to do is not buy ANY titles from this group. No-one forces you to buy certain newspapers. They live on advertising and if the advertisers see a decline in their coverage, they will go elsewhere.

There are plenty of published alternatives available to members of the general public on Sundays and on weekdays.

Good! Hopefully the Sun, Express, Daily Mail and all the other trash papers will follow closely behind.

It proves what we long suspected that a good proportion of the British media is lower than a snake's belly when it comes to the pursuit of commercial gain. It doesn't matter how distorted and sensational the story, or how it was obtained, as long as it sells.

I look forward to an era of responsible (especially print) journalism, although I'm not holding my breath.

'Dear Mr Murdoch'....indeed

In full: (and most apposite)

Dear Mr. Murdoch, what have you done
With your News of the Screws and your Soaraway Sun?
You sharpen our hatred
You've blunted our minds
We're drowning in nipples and bingo and sex crimes
How many time must they poke and they pry
Must they twist and lie?
Just to add to the grime they even screwed up The Times
Love to kick their arse goodbye oh wouldn't i!

Dear Mr. Murdoch you play hard to see
But with your bare-arsed cheek you should be on page three
And dear Mr. Murdoch you're really the pits
Bad news is good business, you're the king of the tits

They stain all they touch, they're real woman haters
But we're on their trail
They go straight for the lowest common denominators
How could they fail? go straight to jail - (no bail)!

Dear Mr. Murdoch you're a powerful man
You control half our media whose values don't scan
And dear Mr. Murdoch we're not so amused
Just line up the people whose lives they've abused

Dear Mr. Murdoch what do you know
With your minions like vultures and carrion crow
They've sunk just as low as humans can sink
For profit they tell us how mass murderers think

And dear Mr. Murdoch you come down from on high
You even bought up the air waves, you control all our sky

Dear Mr. Murdoch you're a dangerous chap
With your jingoist lingo we're drowning in crap

Dear Mr. Murdoch where are you coming from?
Getting so hard to tell if you're a yank, Oz or Pom

Dear Mr. Murdoch you're really the pits
Bad news is good business, you're the king of the tits

Dear Mr. Murdoch you do it with zing
At lowering the standards you're really the king

And dear Mr. Murdoch what have you done?
You're not quite as nice as Attila the Hun

Are you really that naive to think if the public stayed away from any future similar tabloid it would die a death?

I'm sorry to say but I'm not the chief executive of Boots so I don't see the difference you seem to that it'll make.

Ill still be reading The Sun. One as it tends to be cheaper (does tend to show in the articles) and its not as formal as some of the other papers. It still is the countries number 1 paper as well (whether that will change it remains to be seen). The Sun also hasnt got anything to do with the NOTW hackings (at the moment).

I do agree that Murdoch shouldnt be allowed to have full control of BSkyB though.
